Quote from PCZone:

"Prince Charles has dismissed computer games as the playthings of simple minded cretins with no more right to walk God's earth than a weasel. The opinionated royal expressed his sentiments at some book thing at the British Museum, bleating: 'One of the great battles we face today is to persuade our children away from the computers towards what can only be described as worthwhile books.' Slamming gaming as nothing more than a shallow pastime persued by a generation of slack-jawed third-wits, the heir to the throne blasted: 'None of us can underestimate the importance of books in an age dominated by the computer screen and constant wish for imediate gratification'."

Now, I know what you're all thinking "Oh poo, this is going to turn into another Are Games Bad For You post." But it's not. What I want to know is:

Do you think someone in the position that Prince Charles is in, should make a comment about something he blatantly knows nothing about? Or is that really how he feels?

Ok, I don't know what some of your opinions are towards him, or the Royal Family in general, but like it or not, he will be our next King. Should someone as influential as he is, make comments that could affect the gaming industry, which it is obvious he knows nothing about? Especially when gaming brings a lot of money into the UK as a number of the top developers and publishers are located here.

My personal feeling is that you should never comment on something you know nothing about. But he *is* prince, does that exclude him from basic common sense such as that? Or is that his genuine opinion gleaned from looking into the subject deeply?

Of course, his comments could be dismissed as representative of that generation. A generation that didn't grow up with computers and probably feels quite alienated from them. But he is a public figure, and he shouldn't really make comments that could hurt the an industry that in the last 20 years has emerged as one of the fastest growing and most creative in the UK.

At a time when the UK has more external investment (other countries investing in us) than internal (us investing in us), is it really a good move to make a comment that could affext this? Especially when the industry concenred happens to be the second largest global market, worth bilions of pounds each year?

What if he turns round next week and says something like: "Cars are smelly and dirty, we should all walk."? Soon we could have no industry left at all!

Of course, I could be completely wrong.

What do you think?

Hey, Diana was just as bad. They're all members of the establishment that think they're better than those who aren't (most of us I guess). Anyway the whole marriage was just for show, neither of them really loved each other and Diana got cash at the end of it all. What annoys me is that if she felt so sorry for the countries with mine problems then why didn't she just pay most of her money towards getting them cleared up? She could have easily lived in less luxury because she had plenty already. She could have even tried to hire/borrow British Military mine sweepers. If the royals really want to help their country and the people of the world they should keep a lot less money for themselves and spend it on people who don't even have homes, or who are starving. Bill Gates as well, he should give more money towards deserving people. The problem is getting the money there, since most of these charities are no good, spend too much on "administration" and rarely co-operate to a common goal even though it's what they all want.

"Hello, today Prince Charles was crowned king in a huge ceremony. Unfortunately, it was ruined by a mob of about 50 people, ranging from around 12-36 years old, protesting against our new King. They had signs up with things like, "We're not cretins!" and, "You and your tiger-shooting father sanctioned the murder of Diana!" One protester managed to somehow get right up to Charles, and said, "God, your eyes! I HATE your eyes!" The boy, about 17 years old, went by the name of Grix Thraves. "

I kill things in a virtual world. Prince Charlie kills things in real life. It wouldn't surprise if he and his tiger-shooting father sanctioned the murder of Diana.

Prince Charles is a dick. He wrecked Diana's life, he's stuck in the past, has no decent morals, no idea of computer games, no idea of God... oh, and no big idea of how big his ears are, because if he did, he'd have had them 'done' by now!

Ahh, Royal baiting. It's not a substitute for Ggillen baiting but it comes close.

Expect more in next month's PC Zone...

"The Queen has added to the debate of the Royal families hatred of gaming by slating Quake III. In a recent article in 'What Corgi' magazine, she bleated 'I think games like this are bad for one's soul. It's what drove one's mother to drink you know. She's constantly pickled due to one too many sessions on Wolfenstein 3D and now sits in her room fragging othr internet users on one's royal PC. My son was right to slam games, I think that children should take up a much better pastime, such as shooting Pheasants like one's husband. Look what a well adjusted person he turned out to be. Now about my corgis......'"

Yes, and there are the British companies (many of which are better than foreign ones) such as Rare and Lionhead. They also use our people, and I think Blizzard was started by Brits (though it's based in America).

To each his own.
