Yes, I have unintentionally found the Windows XP equivilent to the Blue Screen of Death™ whilst logging onto my computer this morning.

I turned it on, nothing appeared on my monitor. I waited for a couple minutes, and still nothing.

I turned off the power and re-turned it on. Almost immediately a black screen appeared with the writing:

"We are very sorry but Windows XP failed to start. Please select one of the following options using the arrow keys and enter."

It listed Safe Mode, Continue, and Start Windows with previous working settings.

So it appears that the new blue is black!

Yes. Like that video on howstuffworks.com showing what happens if you shoot a monitor. The glass is like 3cm thick.

I find violence, although not fixing the problem, can alleviate some of the stress associated with unexplained crashes.

tip - monitors are best slapped from the side, rather than punched head on. screens are tougher than they let on.

I had a much worse problem a few weeks ago.

Restarted PC due to it freezing. Was greated with an error along the lines of "The file system/system32/config is corrupt

Had to reinstall the first time and lost a lot of stuff. Two days later it happened again, found some sites that helped me to get it back on and do a system restore.

Made the blue screen of death a happy sight..
