The Belgium Grand Prix is one of the greatest racetracks in the world. With Michael Schumacher winning the World Championship and Ferrari winning the Constructors Championship at Hungary, only precious race wins and runner up spots are up for grabs.

Friday practise is usually a good indicator of performance. However, it started to rain leaving times looking very strange. Michael Schumacher did a time in the early stages, which were dry. Coulthard found it tough going when he crashed out without doing a time. This could seriously affect his chances.

Saturday practise sees a session cancelled due to fog. One 45-minute session saw Montoya and Ralf Schumacher head the list. Wet weather followed leading to a possible wet qualifying.

Qualifying started out wet but was getting drier all the time. The person who was last across the line would more than likely be fastest. It happened that Montoya did a storming time and took pole position ahead of Ralf and Michael Schumacher. It was bad news for Minardi and Arrows as they missed the 107% time. They may be allowed to start Sunday’s race if the stewards allow for extenuating circumstances.

Warm Up saw Michael Schumacher dominate by over a second ahead of Hakkinen. This was the first serious dry running so this will be important for the race. Alonso, however, was running well but had a huge smash at Blanchemont, one of the fastest parts of the track. He should be able to race however.

The Race is where the hard work has to be done. After the formation lap, Frentzen stalls on the grid and the first start is aborted. After a delay, another formation lap starts but Montoya stalls and has to start at the back with Frentzen.

The race starts and Ralf takes an early lead. Michael has a good run out of Eau Rouge and takes the lead. Benetton have had a wonderful start with Fisichella in 4th and Button in 8th. Button gets taken by Raikkonen and Button seems to be slow.

Hakkinen and Coulthard both take Fisichella. Raikkonen is the man on the move as he takes Villeneuve for 7th. Montoya has climbed from 22nd to 15th.

On Lap 5, Irvine and Burti touch. Burti loses his front wing and goes out of control into the tyre barrier at almost 160 mph head on. The safety car was brought out but the race was then red flagged. Burti was later found to have concussion. Raikkonen stopped and is out of the race.

Eventually, the race is to restart. Ralf Schumacher was stuck on the jacks when all the cars left, so he has to start at the back. The race starts again for the 3rd time. The Benettons again get a great start and Fisichella moves into 2nd and Button in 4th.

A first corner contact sees Heidfeld and De La Rosa make contact. They both retire after a lap. Montoya was struggling and then the engine blew to compound his misery.

Button is slowing again and slips from 4th to 8th. A number of cars pit and Ralf Schumacher takes Verstappen. Barrichello pits, followed a lap later by Michael Schumacher and Coulthard. Coulthard comes out in front of Barrichello.

Fisichella leads but then pits giving the lead back to Michael Schumacher. Panis receives a 10 second penalty for crossing the white line on coming out of the pit lane. Barrichello’s front wing comes off at the Bus Stop chicane and loses a lot of places.

Barrichello comes into the pits and gets a new wing but Button does almost exactly the same as Barrichello but Button crashes into the wall and goes out. Fisichella pits and Coulthard comes in a lap later hoping to come out in front. Fisichella has managed to stay out in front of Coulthard in 2nd place.

Coulthard, after a few laps, takes Fisichella and starts pulling away. Barrichello takes Alesi for 6th but then Trulli’s engine blows from 5th place. A battle for 6th place happens between Alesi and Ralf Schumacher but Ralf can’t get by.

Michael Schumacher crosses the finish line to become the most successful racing driver of all time with 52 wins. 2nd came Coulthard followed by a wonderful drive by Fisichella for 3rd. 4th and an uneventful race for Hakkinen. 5th was Barrichello followed by a well-earned 6th for Alesi with Ralf Schumacher in a close 7th.

The key moments were Williams inability to get off the line and they seemed underpowered for a lot of the race. Benettons with their super starts and a great drive by Fisichella. Michael Schumacher being the class of the field being a second faster then anyone.

I get most of my F1 info from itvf1.com and formula1.com. I like formula1.com. It has live timing of all sessions.

Yahoo have a good F1 section. Interesting race yesterday, and Burti can consider himself very lucky. I wonder how many more nasty crashes he'll go through before he's had enough.

It was great seeing Fisichella doing so well. I rate him highly, and always thought if he ended up in one of the top cars that he would win a lot of races. I rate him higher than Trulli, who has the talent, but hardly ever seems to capitalise on it. Benetton should have kept Fisichella in my opinion.

Michael Schumacher has the most race wins now, but I wouldn't say that necessarily makes him 'all time best driver'. With a sport like F1, I don't really think you can compare different eras in time very easily, it's too technology dependent.

Good review mate!

Where did you find out all of the info about the practice sessions? itv-f1.com?

Anyway, it was certainly not a boring race! Thankfully Burti will be ok, that looked like it could have been VERY serious.

Schumy is now the best driver ever, like we didn't know that already!

Coulthard still can't win when there's no pressure on him, and Hakkinen is still as unconcerned about winning as ever, hopefully he'll retire soon.

I bet Trulli is glad he's going to Benetton next year, the Benetton looked to have a good car this weekend, and hemust be nnoyed with the Jordan blowing up all the time!

I bet Fisichella isn't too impressed with the swap though....
