1. Their Pace.
2. Heskey's Strength (Which makes up for Owen's lack of strength of the ball.
3. Both know each other very well. They know where each other is on the pitch without looking up. Like Shearer and Sheringham had in Euro 96.
No defence want one of the fastest forwards in the game (Owen) running with the ball at them.
Also who wants a big lump like Heskey running at them at full pace. I don't!
That's why Heskey is picked ahead of the others when Owen is fit and playing.
One bad point against Heskey is that when Owen is not playing with him he is not as good.
Folwer and Owen are too a like, both are goal poachers. They don't work together well.
> Sheringham has always relied on his reading of the game
Ive always said that Sheringham gains 2 seconds on most players before they even start running for the ball, because of the way he reads the game and has lots of experience.
Hes always the player that runs in on the goalkepper first. Not because hes the fastest runner, but because he know that if that keeper saves the ball and it rebounds he can tap it in for a goal, which is what he did very successfully for ManU last season.
england to have a chance of winning a major tournament have got to have a 2nd world class striker having Owen is not enough. Heskey is nowhere near good enough but he's the best of a rubbish bunch to be Owen's sidekick. The man would fall down if you breathed on him and he always seems to be going backwards he hasn't got any pace at all to run at defenders and when he does he needs a rest at the end of it
> If Sheringham was 10 years younger Heskey wouldn't get a
look in.
Sheringham does not need to be 10 years younger. He never had pace 10 years ago so he has lost nothing in his game. Sheringham has always relied on his reading of the game and on that score he looks as sharp now as he was a decade ago. Forget age the England strike partnership for next summers world cup should be Sheringham and Owen.
I used to dispise Sheringham, mainly because he played for Spurs. I dispised him even more when he joined United, but as an Arsenal fan I can not deny the man has quality. You can not win world cups with strikers like Emile Heskey. You need quality that can unlock the tightest of defences and Sheringham is the man to play alongside Owen.
thing is though,

Possibly, but I doubt it very much. Most players are at their peak between 28-31. So I reckon Beckham could make a huge impact in the 2004 Euro's and 2006 World Cup. Roll on.
I genuinely feel that Beckham could reach that level

I rate Paul Scholes very highly but I have to disagree with you 100%. Right now there is not a single player in this country who is more influential than David Beckham. I base my feelings on International performances - not club performances.
When judging world class players I think you have to base it on their performance at International level. Many players have produced good club level status but failed to cut it on the world stage (Cantona, Barnes etc). The only possible exception is George Best. It was not possible to judge him on the international stage as Northern Ireland never made it to a major tournament during his playing days - therefore we have to guess what impact he might have made.
Without a doubt the best two players I have ever seen at International level were Maradona and Platini. I am too young to have seen Pele and looking at more recent players (Rivaldo, Figo, Zidane etc) I have not seen any of them having the same influence on a team that Maradona and Platini had. I genuinely feel that Beckham could reach that level for England by the time England play in the 2006 world cup.
England have the potential, but no strength in depth. If we go to

I agree 100%. If England come up against someone like Argentina without Beckham or Owen they will get punished. England are only going to get far in the world cup with those two playing, becasue regardless of the perfermance of the rest of the team these two can produce individual moments of brillance that can win a match.
