You must have read this by now, can't help but laugh for some strange reason .... up goes my word count.

Sony's PSX downgraded
Disappointing news from Sony HQ - the highly anticipated PSX super console has gone under the butcher's knife and come out worse for wear.
Bah, humbug. Damn and blast. Curses, etc. Just when you thought Sony were gearing up to take over the world in 2004, with the arrival of the PSX, the announcement of the PS3 and the launch of the handheld PSP, they go and shoot themselves in the foot. After much internal consideration, Sony have decided to shelve some of the features of the PSX and downgrade some of the specifications of the much coveted 'high end' PS2 alternative, leaving a very unhappy Japanese public.

The biggest disappointment is the news that the PSX will not feature built-in broadband functionality, so it'll be a strictly an offline experience. This is a massive blow to Japanese customers who have already placed their pre-orders, and considering Sony have been bleating on about how the PSX was going to be a complete home entertainment hub, not having internet access is a bit of a cop-out. Even the crummy old standard PS2 can go online and that's three years old.

But that's not all. The unit was originally planned to play and record DVDR+W media, but this function will now no longer be included. Sony did infact announce the removal of the DVDR+W record function a while back, but now they've revealed that it won't even play the discs either. It'll still happily record onto standard DVD-RW discs however, so no problems there.

What else? Hmm, let's see. The ability to play and store MP3s has been canned, as has the ability to play CD-R data discs. Want to view TIFF and GIF images on your PSX like Sony said you could? Too bad. How about all those movies you shot on your CyberShot digital camera that Sony said you could watch on your PSX? Nope, sorry. Remember when Sony said that you'd be able to copy from the PSX's hard drive to DVD-RW at an impressive 24x speed? Try halving that.

A catalogue of woe indeed.

So why the sudden penny-pinching, chaps? Surely you guys have got money to burn? "We have changed the specification," says Taro Takamine, spokesman for SCEJ. "Basically, as of October 7th, we planned some features such as DVD+RW playback, CD-R playback, TIFF and GIF support and PlayStation Broadband, but we decided to drop such features." But why dammit, why? "We are not able to complete testing of some formats before the holiday shopping season. Our priority is to launch before the year end." In other words, you're rushing it to get it into homes for Christmas. Cheers.

Incredibly, the Japanese release of the PSX is only 11 days away, and the removal of such core features as broadband functionality less than two weeks before launch is possibly the most audacious move from Sony we've ever seen. For a different perspective, picture this scenario: You've placed your pre-order for PS3 after being wowed by news of a 256-bit core processing unit, a 400 MHz graphics chip and super-fast broadband connectivity. Then, without warning, two weeks before launch, Sony slap in a slower processor, yank out half the innards and remove the best bits, leaving you with an empty wallet, an inferior machine and a broken heart. The swears that would pass your lips would make a sailor blush.

We've placed out trust in Sony before and lord knows we'll do it again, so we'll hold firm in out belief that they'll sort out the PSX for the UK release in mid 2004. An extra 6 months of development time should mean they can squeeze in the features above without breaking too much of a sweat, leaving a fervent European public with, for once, a sweeter deal than the Japanese.

There's still the PS3 and the PSP to get excited about though, so don't start crying just yet. More PSX news as and when.

I thought that Sony was about to create a new success
But then the company announced the shocking announcement which disappointed me.
I already own a ps2 so the psx we know today does not really appeal to me, but if the psx had all the features sony originally announced i would have given it som serious thoughts.
