The "General Games Chat" forum, which includes Retro Game Reviews, has been archived and is now read-only. You cannot post here or create a new thread or review on this forum.
So, to cheer you all up from your empty-wallet syndrome, here are some tips on gaming on the cheap.
1. Win games from here! You cannot get a better price than free... Loads of other sites give away stuff all the time, and they are free to enter. You could try and win a Dyson, and if it comes off, sell it to your mum and buy a few games.
2. Rent games. Not only does it amuse you for an evening, you get first hand knowledge of the game, and know wether to buy it once you have the cash. You can also compare your thoughts to your magazines to see if they are on your wavelength.
3. Read your machines instruction manual. You never know, you might learn something!
4. Play your old games in novel ways. If you have GT3, head out on the test track and learn how to do 360s and reverse handbrake 180s, like they did in Knightrider.
5. Train on your old games. Become a meister of them. Learn every move in Tekken, every course in Ridge, completely slaughter your mates when they come over. Even better when you don't tell them you have been practicing, and stake money on it - then buy games!
6. Buy secondhand/ex-rental. SR now have pre-owned games in their stores, as do many other shops (no names...). Check out what blockbuster have to offer, I got a PS2 game for a tenner.
7. Trade in your old games. If you don't ever play them, get something new. Selling privately gets a better price than selling to a shop, but takes longer.
8. Learn your games in real life. Learn to fight by watching tekken. Learn to corner by playing Moto GP.
9. Trade consoles with a mate. Temporarily swap your machine for his, and clue up on the opposing hardware.
10. Chat on the forums. Get clued up on whats going on and maybe bag a game if a good idea comes to you.
11. Go retro. Dig out that crusty Megadrive from the loft and play those classics! Be amazed at how they arent as good as you remember.
12. Learn to program. Get a PC compiler or just get your Speccy out, and write your own games. PS2 yabasic isnt as pants as it sounds.
If all else fails, try some of these non-console related time wasting ideas to fill the viod between now and the next game...
13. Reinact games with your mates. Send them to You've been framed when it goes wrong, get your £250 and buy some games.
14. Sell lemonade. Like you did on the BBC! buy games with profits.
15. Beg for money. Get your oldest clothes, put a hat on the floor and play a tin whistle. Spend the money on games.
16. Wash your neighbors car. £4-5 is reasonable, and they will let you do it again if the work is good. 10 cars will get you a game.
17. Learn lockpicking. Nick a car, and drive directly into your local games store. Grab games and run away.
There you go. You cannot ever say you are bored again. There are no bored people in this world, only boring people.
(Slave does not condone no. 17, btw.)
