David Mitchell and Robert Webb are two of the current leading comedy actors of our time. They have starred in a variety of films and shows, such as ‘The Magicians’, ‘That Mitchell and Webb Look’ and also ‘Peep Show’.
Peep Show was originally aired in 2003. It featured Mark Corrigan (played by David Mitchell), a sensible, yet erratic loan manager for JLB credit. At the other end of the spectrum, we have Jeremy Usbourne (played by Robert Webb), who is a non-caring, budding musician interested in drugs, his career in music and women. Despite Mark and Jeremy’s differences, they have known each other for years, since university in fact, and have lived together ever since.
Mark is the more financially successful out of the two, a fact which is mentioned throughout the current 6 series show. I find it odd that a sensible and clever 30 year old would allow somebody to live off him for so long. Also the fact that they do not get along at all, and usually engage in conflict, mostly in language, occasionally physical, yet they still live in the same accommodation as each other.
Jeremy is all about partying, breaking the rules and taking anything that is around, a complete opposite to Mark. He hates men in suits (a way of referring to people who do a 9am-5pm job everyday for years upon years), which is odd seeing as that is the description of Mark. I also find it odd that Jeremy would agree to live with Mark for so long, as in and out of the show, Jeremy is embarrassed to be socially seen with Mark. The answer is probably that Jeremy is too lazy to find his own place and pay for it, and would rather sponge off of Mark instead. So, the relationship that the whole show is based on is the strangest relationship around, but we love the characters too much to take note that the relationship is ludicrous.
Not wanting to go too much into the basis of Peep Show, and the story, I’ll talk about Nancy, the American Christian whom Jez meets at a dance group when tagging along with Mark and Sophie. The beef I have with Nancy is the moment she gets annoyed with Jez when she finds out he had an affair with Toni from next door. Whoa Nancy! Let’s rewind, a couple of episodes before, Nancy has sex with a guy from the Dance class, right in front of Jez. It works both ways love...
The most annoying character personally is Sophie Chapman. I really wish they would've cut her out of the show in Series 1, but annoyingly, this went the other way, and she's become a main character now, especially since she's having Jez's child.
The best character for me has to be Super Hans. He doesn't show up too much (not enough for my liking), but when he does, he comes out with some of the best lines in the show (such as naming a pub him and Jeremy have received 'The Swan and Pedo').
These are just a few niggles I have with what is otherwise a very successful TV Series, which is still being made now. I just hope they don't do an overkill on the amount of series.
