Ok, I've got the cables connected (ethernet cable to ethernet port on PC + PC to ADSL modem to phone line), the xbox goes through the motions fine until it tries to find Live and then it can't find it.

You could try shouting expletives at the sucker manning the helpline.

* Question his sexuality
If it's a girl you could mention that her moustache is scraping on the phone making it difficult to understand her.

I don't plug my xbox in through my PC so I don't know how that works. I use a router plugged into my broadband connection.
You will need to set up the IP address and DNS server addresses in the Live options though don't forget, although I suspect you've already done all that.
