Not because they have any influence, precisely the opposite in my case.
I am having a monumentally, seethingly rubbish day with what feels like every single little thing bringing me to boiling point.
I get angry easy, and when I have a day like today, the urge to punch someone hard in the face is all too tempting.
A serious rage that makes you grit your teeth and clench your fists as you smile at someone and restraint yourself from launching at them.
So what do I do instead?
I go home, stick on a video-game and unleash my frustrations that way. It’s a lot easier than actually losing control for real, no harm is done and I get to keep my stupid little job.
This is the precise reason why I like games like Soldier of Fortune, Max Payne and other over-the-top computer games.
Because they give me a release valve for what would be an otherwise nasty situation occuring.
Don’t think that everyone’s going to go mental because they play games, some people play games so they don’t go mental.
I know, when my mate comes over, after a few dozen people have been shot and burned by myself on the PC and a few rounds of Smackdown on the PS2, I’ll feel calmer and more relaxed.
I’m glad that I can play a stupidly violent game that affords me the opportunity to vent anger, to feel physically calmer and more subdued simply because I wasted a few pixels on screen.
It means I keep this pointless job another while longer, I don’t attack the 1st person to say something wrong and I get to quietly and calmly enjoy the rest of my evening.
So this responsible, adult gamers says good for violent games.
You have no idea the amount of good they do.
I bet you
> thought Brasseye was horrific,
lol Pidopl ISLES, it's a brilliant show! it shouldn't have been attacked so badly by the press, but any advertising is good advertsing.
Did anyone see the programme? damn hilarious although there were serious issues and I can understand why lots of people got mad about it.
> I think it's very true, killing lots and lots of maybe innocent
> people is great fun and seems to relieve you of whatever might be
> going on around you, wether it's the blood or hostages your troubles
> flow away.
I bet you thought Brasseye was horrific, Belsen Spice was bad for faking the lip ring and the age of consent for homosexuals should be 35.
I love Daily Mail readers
Answer: Don't let monkeys play games.
Just to qualify it though. Remember when Teenage Mutant Teenage Turtles the Movie came out in cinemas (you might not, it was a LONG time ago), press reports started coming in of kids in playgrounds all over the country starting to use karate chops and kicks in their playfighting, in one instance a young child had his liver split by an unfortunate blow to his abdomen from his playmate. Naturally this made the headlines.
The only connection was that the two children involved had both recently been to see the film. The press made this connection, as they tend to do to sell newspapers, called it a scoop, and blamed the film for influencing the children to behave in this manner.
Basically though, kids ALWAYS immitate what they see their idols do on screen, even some adults mimic their heroes, perhaps in the way they move or the way they dress, latching onto a certain style.
However, there's still NO proven connection between what is seen on screen and people's reasons for acting the way they do. Sure, listening too certain music or watching certain images will give you a short-term chemical kick to the brain, and make you feel happy or terrified or elated or vengeful or whatever. But that's all it is, short-term, a matter of minutes perhaps at most. Books, films, images, art, games...anything that stimulates the senses, can alter our 'present' frame of mind, but actions are more premeditated, requiring cognition, and it's the cognition that is at fault when people do bad things, not the input to the senses.
It's a similar sort of thing with music. Do bands like Slipknot, Korn etc allow you to release your anger? Probably, but it's quite possible that they make you more easily irritable in the long run.
I'm not saying any of the above (or the following, seeing as I'm going to say a bit more) is true, just that it's a possibilty.
Things like that can put you in a certain 'mindset'. If you're already in that mindset, then great, you won't be affected and if it relaxes you then no problem. If not, is it likely that it can put you in that mindset?
These days my MGS2 demo keeps me going!!
