Quick question here - has anyone else in this forum done any case mods? At the moment, I'm stuck with a very dull e-star silver/beige/black case, and I'd like a new one ready for i9, to go with my hardware upgrades (athlon 1.4ghz, GeForce3).

If you have, do you have any tips/warnings on the process? I've done some basic work, lights, paint jobs, but I've never done blowholes/windows panels etc. Ideally I'd like some cold cathode tubes and a window panel (with etching) on a Orchid 860B, or similar. I don't intend to take to a new £80 chassis with a drill myself, but has anyone found any particularly good colour/design ideas?

For people who have no idea what I'm on about...case modding - making your PC something worth looking at instead of a dull beige case that gets hidden away at the first opportunity. What's the point? Just eye candy really, if you take your PC around to gaming events, or spend a lot of time looking at it on your desk. Can get very expensive...nice aluminum PC70 case is over £200..

Anyway, people who do know what I'm on about- suggestions/warnings?

Now that looks incredible! I like the idea of running one round the inside of a fan aperture (I cut one into the front of my 'carpet monster'). Neat that some run off a Molex.

Yeah, I'm looking at blue LEDs, but ideally I'd like a front baybus - unfortunately, the only reasonably priced ones I can find are on beige plates, and I don't fancy dismantling the baybus to spray it without covering the LEDs.

I've seen the drives and case on overclockers...look nice, just realised that the Orchid has a sliding front panel, which isn't exactly what I'm looking for. Tempted to repaint some old ones - I've got some spares lying around I'll do some practising on.

As for cold cathode tubes..sorry if SR don't like this, feel free to delete the post, but as far as I know, you don't stock any of the same products as these people - it's all case mod stuff, lights, panels etc. A CC tube is basically just a small strip light, draws power from the PSU. This isn't where I'm getting the stuff from, just has clearer pics...I'm going for a black case, with blue lighting and a square window panel with a custom 'enigma' etch. Add plenty of cooling and my new parts, and it's quite a nice box really =)

I resprayed the last PC I built with PlastiCote textured paint. But I made the mistake of not rubbing down the existing costing before I primed it and the new finish is not very robust. What do you mean by "cold cathod tubes" - sounds interesting - any examples on the web you can point us to?

overclockers.co.uk do a black case, together with black floppy drive and CD-ROM to go with it - at least its a start!

Blue LEDs are pretty neat and not as extortionately expensive as they used to be. Maplin stock them.

Right...I'm settled on my server window mod, just need my custom etch to go on (frosted glass sort of template thing). Suggestions for what this should be? Has to be something that will last - i.e. not a current game, or clan, as these may change while I still have the box, but I'm not buying a new window...

Got plenty of info on it now, just seeing if they'll install the server window for me too...I'll find you on MSN.

Hey Reaper, when you find out more can you through any URLs my way, this does sound kinda interesting.

Take the metal case off, make a camoflage template and spray it. Do your keyboard while you are there, Hackers style. :D

=P I will. I'll get the plate window done by kustom pcs, then add the cathode tubes myself..

This is all speculation at the moment, the upgrades come first..

I know what your on about, never do it though. As for warnings, make sure you don't drop it out of any windows, I've heard that kind of thing can happen. :-P
