On the 1st March, over 30 million PS3's were rendered useless. The problem was quickly named "The Apocalyps3," it affected all PS3 consoles bought before September 1st 2009. Most of which were the "fatter" models and a tiny fraction of the "slim" version.

The units weren't able to transition from 28 February to March 1st. This was beacause of an even numbered non - leap year. The clock deafaulted to the time of Decemeber 31 1999 and also disabling the console's ability to be able to connect to the internet via the Playstation Network. It also affected some games by not being able to start correctly.

Trophy data on the affected units, records of in-game achievements were vulnerable to the glitch. Game that does not inlcude trophy data, such as Metal Gear Solid 4, remained as normal.

The trophy data that was corrupted can now be fixed by loading the game with the corrupted data or by going to Playstation's menu. Manuever across to the FRIENDS CATEGORY on the far right of the menu and then opening PLAYER'S PROFILE prompts home consoles to sychronize with the data stored on Sony's playstation network.

This bug has struck before on the Zune, Microsoft's protable media player, on December 31st 2008. When this struck, Microsoft issued a statement advising it's users to stop using the product for 24hrs. Yet, on Sony's bug, they repsonded with 3 different updates on their North American and European websites. The first, was to confirm the issue, the second advising the owners of the "fatter" PS3 to refrain from using the product and the third update on March 2nd was announcing that the problem had been fixed.

It is expected that Sony will release an automatic software update that will prevent the random glitch from occuring on the same day in 2014 - the next even numbered non - leap year.
