The film that followed was called "Lawndogs", and is one of the most uplifting, well-written, poignant and original things I have seen since The Shawshank Redemption.
Similar in tone and feeling.
Plot:
Mischa Barton is 10yr old Devon, daughter of a newly arrived couple into this housing community where everyone knows each other and has barbeques on a Sunday.
She doesn't fit in with the other kids, she's quiet, intelligent and doesn't like the kids because "they smell like tv and talk too fast".
She prefers the company of the guy that mows everyone's lawns, Trent.
Trent isn't liked by anyone, he's the handyman where everyone is concerned with social climbing and it just wouldn't do to talk with the help.
These two develop a genuine friendship, both feel shunned by the perfect happy people around them and they bond.
But they know that this ideal community would not approve of a 10yr old girl and a 21yr old man, so they agree to keep it their "secret friendship"
This movie is about friendship, tolerance, bigotry, appearances not being true, hope, faith and magic.
One of those films where not much happens in the way of action, but I fell so completely into this world that I didn't want it to end.
It manages to avoid the all-too-obvious tone of "little girl and handyman" that would so easy to fall into, there is nothing remotely sexual about these two.
It's just two friends having fun.
I can't explain why I found this film so utterly wonderful, except it lacks any nastiness or smug irony.
Much like Shawshank and Field of Dreams, it just presents situations that make you feel good.
Make you think that not everyone is out to climb over each other, that there are moments and people that can just make life seem...perfect, if only for that one moment.
I'd seen this on the shelf in video-stores but never looked at it, I wished I had done. I'm buying this tomorrow and watching it as soon as I can.
If you found Shawshank made your heart lift, if you loved Field of Dreams or The Straight Story because it had people you cared about...if you can watch a movie and just feel really, really good at the end without that making you "gay" or a "loser", then rent Lawndogs.
This has been one of those all too rare moments when I just find a film by accident and have been totally blown away by everything about it.
