First of all there were Arcade machines. THey were good and some even had better graphics than some of the home consoles that followed. Games featured Pac-Man and Donkey Kong!
When they became so popular, companies started making computers to use at home. There was the 48k ZXspectrum which had loads of games but took between 5 and 10 minutes to load and the machine could only handle a few colours at a time and crashed a lot.
There was also the commodore which had a lot of games by tape and still took a while loading.
Sinclair, the makers of the ZX spectrum started a console war between them and the commodore and created the ZX Spectrum 128K +2 and +3 models.
After hundreds of games after the 1984 launch of the spectrum, along came the Amiga, BBC and NES. The Amiga used the PC's equivilent to floppy disks for the A:\ drive. The games didn't take so long to load as the previous consoles and therefore became popular.
The BBC computer was like a mixture of a PC and Console. It used B:\ 5 inch floppy disks and ran games like 'granny's garden'. This was awkward to use but it didn't crash all the time!
The Nintendo Entertainment system offered gamers great sound and good graphics quality starting off the Zelda gaming craze and featured great titles like Mario Bros!
Nintendo also brought out one of the first handhelds, Gameboy which played lil 8 bit carts giving gamers the opportunity to play their favourite games anywhere. The only problem with this is it was so hard to see the lil green screen!
Sega brought out the megadrive and megadrive II which enabled 16 bit play and challenged the NES. In return, Nintendo brought out the SNES which also featured 16 bit play but had one of the greatest games in History on it, Zelda: A link to the past.
Sega brought out a handhed machine, Game Gear which featured colour and it's own behind screen lighting enabling people to play Sonics adventure in handheld.
Also the Sega Saturn came out which was 32 bit and became obsolete about a year ago. It had great graphics but not much hype so Sega didn't get the customers it deserved.
Nintendo had brought out the Gameboy Pocket with clearer screen and ability to play all current Gameboy titles.
Pushing Sega out of the Console wars for some time was the Sony Playstation! It had cheap pixely graphics (and still does) and only had one star, Lara Croft who has worked her way to the Sega Dreamcast, PC and Nintendo Gameboy Color.
Nintendo released what was originally named Ultra64, the N64. It had great graphics as smooth as can be and starred one of the most popular games of all time: Goldeneye. The sequel Perfect Dark has become even more popular as the game is so advanced that it has beaten the Playstation at the console wars.
Nintendo also brought out the Gameboy Colour which can play up to 32 bit games (Mickey's racing adventure) but still can't get 3-D graphics or realistic sound effects. BUT it has featured the most popular game ever Pokémon.
Sega made their next mistake by releasing the Dreamcast, they released this technology much earlier than Nintendo's Dolphin and Sony's very originally named Playstation 2 (do you think it will copy the Rocky movies and make a Playstation 5?) meaning that they had something to study to see how people would react with a modem and 128 bit gaming.
Sony, soon to release their next console are hoping that Playstation fans wont turn their backs on them and buy a Dolphin instead, are about to release the PSX2. They need to do this soon as many Sony fans have turned to Nintendo because of Pokémon and Perfect Dark!
Nintendo have 2 new consoles to release with the hardware just completed: The gameboy advance which will allow players to play original GB games and play new games in 3D.
There new console is the Dolphin which will have a faster processor than Sony but have the same 128 bit feature. a sequel to Perfect Dark has been promised!
