Now that I've seen Mario and Zelda (albeit in dodgy photographed screenshots) I'm ready to have another one - out of tear-jerking disappointment.
Don't get me wrong, Mario looks great graphic wise - a perfect, high quality, 3D interpretation of the great plumber himself. The thing I'm very worried about this 'glass' thing on his back. What's Mario doing with, what will probably be, some form of weapon? Luigi's Mansion has him with a 'ghost hoover'. This is fine as this is a spin off game but when a proper Mario game involves some sort of 'mechanical assistance' then the series is taking a turn in the wrong direction. MArio has always survived on power-ups rather than standard issue kit. Hopefully I'm jumping to conclusions and it won't be such a central part to the game but it will be a worry until I find out more.
Now let's turn to Zelda. One word springs to mind: ruined. Zelda games (and RPGs in general) are about immersing yourself in another world or environment - not playing a cartoon! Of all the developers in the world I'd have expected Nintendo to be the one least likly to jump on the graphic-style bandwagon and use something cell-shading in one of it's games just because it's a bit of a buzz word at the moment. Putting a 2D animated character on a 3D background looks rubbish. Now I know the screens of Zelda so far are a bit dodgy, as with Mario, but look at Bomberman Generations for an idea of how stupid this effect is and you'll get my point.
As I type this I'm downloading a video of Zelda in action - maybe (hopefully) this will change my mind.
One thing it won't change is how rubbish Link looks. In Ocarina of Time he was young to begin with but in the GameCube version he looks like he's only a few weeks old! Is this really the sort of character you want to be taking on a world-saving adventure? Of course it isn't.
There's still time for them to change their mind I suppose but something tells me they're not going to. For now my opinions stand. And they will stand on Mario until I find out more and on Zelda for at least the next 17 minutes :(
Prepare for initial disappointment with the Zelda screens but trust me and get the video. 8 megs of pure ecstacy.
IGNORE (almost) EVERYTHING I SAID!!!
When you see it in motion it looks absolutely unbelieveable! There are no words in the English language that are fit to describe it! The full thing looks like an immaculately animated cartoon! Baby Link (my mind isn't changed on that matter) is drawn in a way that doesn't look 2D when it's in motion and fits in perfectly with the surrounding cartoon world. There is the point it may be a bit too cartoon-ish in terms of gameplay but we won't know that for a while.
Also, as if to make up for my initial disappointment, the movie includes a big band verison of the famous Zelda theme. Oh how I've missed that...
If Mario Sunshine can redeem itself half as much as this then I'm going to be so sorry I ever started this thread.
