Alas, now is the time of the year to begin asking ourselves the age old question; a question more important than the meaning of life itself:-

What is a Jaffa Cake(JC)

Is it a cake as the name suggests and the fact that it is soft.

OR

Is it a biscuit, because it comes in the same sort of packaging as biscuits and the fact that you wouldn't have your birthday, wedding cake made out of jaffa cakes (unless you really loved JC's).

And why is a JC classed as a biscuit or a cake. Why do you class it as a certain type of food.

The base is sponge so it's therefore a cake.

I didn't even watch QI and still knew that (it's in my thread on things you didn't know).

Court case, apparently, decided it finally.

"Cakes and biscuits are zero rated as food but chocolate covered biscuits are standard rated as a luxury food. The Jaffa Cake debate centred on whether it was a small cake (Z/R) or a chocolate covered biscuit (S/R). In the end a 12" Jaffa Cake convinced the Tribunal that it was a cake.

VAT is one of the worst parts of my job :(
