nope my mate has done 150cc without even knowing about the blue flame thing.
but i beat him on bowsers castle hands down, i even lapped him.

Yep, any direction.
You press R no matter what direction your turning in?
When your turning hold down the R button and then move the control stick side to side until the flames turn blue :)
