Upon watching The Bill’s “Beech on the run” it suddenly hit me, robbing banks is just like making a game. How I hear you cry. I will tell you.

If you decide to take the path leading towards crime think about this, while robbing a bank of your choice if takes considerable planning. First off you need to decide which bank to rob, will it be the one with more money but better security or the one with less money and less security? Translated into gaming language, Will you choose the game that costs more money but takes longer to make, overall its better. Or not so good of a game but if still could be huge hit. It costs less to make and takes less time to produce.

What type of bank should you rob? One with gold bars in it? Or just plain cash? One gold bar=£3000, on note=£50 The Gold Bars will be heavily protected but if you pull it off the rewards are immense. What type of genre should you choose? Horror, Sports, Action these are just a few for you to choose from. These genres are so common, why not try to make a cross genre game. If it pays off you will reap the rewards. It is necessary to spend some time thinking about this. Your company should be happy while working on this particular game. If you have a good idea it will usually be a good game. Considering you have the cash mind you.

Which route will you choose too get too and away from the bank? What endings and intro’s will you choose, intro’s are very important and they need worked on lots, after all it’s the first thing you see and the last. The ending is just as important as the intro, just think of all those hard long hours of gaming and you get a pants ending? No thanks
The ending should be good because it’s the last thing you see after completing the game.

What weapons should be used for the job? With the wrong weapon for the job it could be a big flop, imagine turning up to a big bank but only to find out that the security guards have Big ‘ol machine guns pointing in your direction. What characters should you use in your game? With the wrong ones the game could be a total disaster. A cute little rabbit in a flesh eating zombie game? I think not.

How long does it take the police to respond to an emergency call? If you don’t get this right you may get caught. How long should your game be? With the wrong length of time, the game takes too long end. The game will be either drawn out and long so its boring or it will be exciting but ends in the first week of playing. Timing is all.

How Long do you have in the bank? More time, more money but more chance of being caught. Less time, less money but more chance of escaping. How long should levels be, or in certain RPG’s take Zelda for example, it would be how long would it be between each boss. The longer they are it means the more chance the game be not be as successful because you need to put in more action between the levels or bosses, thus costing more money. If you have the money it is worth it but if not, make the levels not as long but packed full of action. The level can still be as long but it won’t be all action filled. It will probably be a success but it will have less chance of being classed as a “classic”

What clothes should you wear on your “job” Pig mask is effective but restricts your field of view. Balaclava if effective but your eyes are showing, witnesses could remember this and it could be vital evidence to your capture. What costumes while your certain characters were? Wearing a bright costume in a dark atmosphere will just not work. Not to hard to get wrong but if done badly the consequences are terrible. Your game will be laughed at!

What music will you play in your chosen transport? This may sound silly but the wrong type of music might get the robbers agitated, especially it they are new to crime. The music should be relaxing putting the “workers” into the right frame of mind. Making them NOT make mistakes. Music, A very important factor to do with games. Without the right music, no games will be sold. The music should match the genre of game. Horror game? Scary music. Action game? Fast music. Racing game? Thumping soundtrack. It doesn’t always work like this, some games use actual soundtracks or they make there own. In GT1 the music isn’t thumping all the time. They took a chance choosing the music different but it has paid off.

Which way shall you get into the bank? Research is needed to find out the best way into the bank. If you just storm through the doors you are likely to be caught. However sneaking in through the back will not get you caught. What plot shall you use? This can be a full on obvious plot so you know “who did it” after an hour or it can be well covered up plot, it requires you too play the game for hours solving every clue and finding everything to find out “who did it” Your guess will be probably wrong as well if the plot is that
good.

My conclusion to all this madness is this, everything needs planning, whether it be robbing banks or making games. They all need careful planning.

I am looking forward to today’s “Beech is back”

The first bank they did, did you see the planning?!? The security camera’s, the wigs, the program that told them if the bloke playing combat flight simulator pressed the alarm button. Also the getaway bikes. Clever. All this needed time and effort, just to plan it!

I personally find it hard to "pop" things into my head. I tried it once with a mini-chip, but that didn't work out.

Hmm, I don't know about your "Beech on the run" thingy, as I don't watch the Bill, but this is most definitely true - however, all developers plan nowadays, as they cannot afford to lose out on a game via poor planning. This issue would have applied more so in the older days, where most coders were a bunch of insane possies. What? Is that a word? Never mind. Anyway, what I'm trying to say here is that before, coders who did not plan made unefficent code which in tuirn led to chunky sized games (i.e. Microsoft ones, heh). But if you plan the processes and the like inbetween, then your game or application will run more smoothly and quickly.
