Some people claim the world of organised crime has become a tired format for movie-makers. I don't agree; it's a genre that will always carry a sense of excitement and glamour, yet at the same time convey the violent and unpredictable life that entails being a wiseguy. There have been lots of brilliant tales of mafiosi shenanigans to bless our screens, and there's an impressive field of contestants vying for my spot of greatest mob movie. No doubt everyone has their different favourite, so post them in and we might find an outright winner.
5th - PULP FICTION - Tarantino's brilliant combination of a razor sharp script and moments of ingenious black comedy always make it a watchable and highly entertaining piece of filmmaking.
4th - SCARFACE - DePalma's tale of the rise and fall of Al Pacino's small time Cuban hoodlum caused a stir at the time of its release due to it's controversially violent content. It packed a powerful punch and was seen as a benchmark in the field.
3rd - DONNIE BRASCO - Superb performances from Pacino and Depp made me like this film so much. It always felt precariously dangerous and gave it that extra tensive edge.
2nd - GODFATHER TRILOGY - I say trilogy because I can't really watch them all as separate movies. The definitive mafia tale, eclipsed only by...
1st - GOODFELLAS - What I think is Scorsese's finest film. Great performances by DeNiro, Pesci and Liotta only further glorify what is an excellent and enthralling tale of life in the mafia.
Brilliant! :D
