The X-Box release is approaching ever closer and with it comes the promise of fantastic realistic video-esque graphics and a processor capable of churning out millions upon millions of polygons. Surely a great selling point, but is that what we want? Are graphics the most important asspect of gaming? Is there a point were it should stop, can games be too realistic? Will they replace nights out and become our only friends? (Scary thought!) Then again that would reduce drinking, and in turn, drink driving! What are your opinions on this subject? Has the console already become your best friend!

Thanks for your replies, ha ha, maybe the owning of a console preventing drink driving thing should be pursued! Seems good to me :)

The thing about games development, programmers KNOW that gameplay is the all powerful all important inclusion in any game. If the gameplay isn't right, the game just won't appeal.

There are very few instances where graphically astounding games have been released that just didn't have the gameplay included, so no matter how good they get the graphics on the next-gen consoles, they are sure to include enough gameplay to keep us interested.

Graphics isn't the only beneficiary of these new powerful machines, gameplay also benefits in that more complicated and powerful game engines can be developed, more involving storylines can be communicated, more things can happen on scren at any one time without noticeable loss of frame rate, more avenues in quests can be opened up, and these things overall contribute to how the game plays.

If consoles do help to reduce drinking and driving then perhaps everyone should be forced to own one, like car or house insurance.

I absalutely agree with you, Eyecandy. Sega has benn king of funky graphics for a long time.

Oh, dear. I think I'm missing the point of the board here somewhere...

Gameplay without good graphics is not enough. For me, console graphics only became good enough from the Dreamcast onwards. The PSX was always let down by its wobbley visuals.

The more detailed the graphics the better, but this does not mean they have to be "realistic". Graphics can have a unique style like Jet Set Radio.
