I liked Hopkins in Silence. He had the bulk and presence to seem a threat, yet the airs of a socialite. Worked brilliantly in my book. In Hannibal they made him into Granddad, unfortunately. It’s hard to come to any sort of opinion on Cox's Lector as he had a very different role in that film. Really, you could easily separate the Cox Lector and the Hopkins Lecter as neither needs the other to exist as a complete character .

I think Red Dragon would be a strange choice as Lector plays such a small role in it. I think they'd have to enlarge his role as it is basically being re-made so people can see more of him. Big question - will it still have the 80's synth soundtrack?

Manhunter (Red Dragon)is an awesome film, and it pains me that they're remaking it.

Edward Norton is locked in to play Will Graham, still deciding on Lector.
I love Manhunter, introduced me to Iron Butterfly and Tom Noonan.

I prefer the Lector in this one, less pantomime and more like Harris originally wrote it - Hopkins just seemed way to cheesy and "Oooo I'm scary" for me.

However, I do think Silence of The Lambs is a top film in it's own right though.
The 2 disc-set is well worth getting

I didn't know about the original version of Red Dragon - quite interesting.

I don't think I'll bother getting Hannibal on DVD. I don't see myself watching it more than once - compared to silance which I've watched twice since I got it last Sunday.

Good point about the sequel too - as Harris would have to make the choice. But then again, is there any possibility of a studio simply making the film without any input from Harris? Or is there some writes to story complication?

Either way, things are looking bad if they attempt another film. Unless it's another version of Red Dragon - that would be rather good!

I've been away for 7 weeks myself mate - it's a shocker all this free time and holidays. Heh

Hannibal is the third film - the first being Michael Mann's brilliant Manhunter. This is based on Red Dragon, but it does look like a remake of it is in the works.

A follow up to Hannibal will be hard to do in the near future for two reasons. Firstly, Harris only writes one Lecter (originally “Lector” though) book per decade, Hannibal seeing us through until about 2008/2009. Secondly the book Hannibal and the film Hannibal end in rather different ways - this would cause problems for Harris. Does he write a sequel to his book or Mamet's screenplay? That said, anything Hannibal Lecter related will be green lighted straight away due to the bucks that rolled in for the last film so there will be another film soon.

Got the Hannibal DVD last week but still not had time to dip into it. Bloody work - I expect to get some free time around the middle of September, which explains my less frequent posting here at the moment. Anyway, from what I've read it isn't a huge change but the hand cuffs aren't involved. However, it is not the original ending from the novel either.

I might have got this wrong, but you made it sound like I prefer Hannibal.

Or are you simply expressing a point in advance and really strongly?

Never mind anyway, but the first one's better - thats why I own it and not Hannibal.

How? How, how, how can anyone prefer Hannibal to Silence of the Lambs? Personal preferences and all that accounted for, but I still fail to see it.

Hannibal is OTT and turns one of movie's best villains into a cuddly old man who just happens to kill some people in an over-the-top manner. Silence of the Lambs was subtle in its violence, it was a slow burner that actual went somewhere c.f. Hannibal that seems content at plodding along in second gear until it reaches a ludicrous conclusion.

Silence of the Lambs is a classic that leaves you gasping for more, Hannibal is a cash in that leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

No-one replied yet, so I'll be kind and do so.....

Hannibal is good yes. It's Ridley Scott so expect cameras sweeping over stunning scenes, and some very intense and emotive times.

But what I think lets down this film is the storyline. Which can't really be blamed on anyone but the writer. It's just not anywhere near as good a plot line, and Dr Lecter really does not come across as the monster he is in the first film.

The ending is ok, although I'd be interested in hearing what the alternative version has to hold (from the DVD release).

Can someone please tell me? Is it worth my while getting it?

Oh and does anyone know if there's truth to a rumour about a 3rd film being made? Could it possibly be Red Dragon?
