Maybe it's a sign of my age but has anyone out there noticed how arcade and home games these days don't have the huge amounts of gameplay that came with the great titles of 10-15 years ago ?

I remember heading down to my local arcade on a saturday morning and playing a game for a few hours on a single go. I also remember pumping 10p's into many games to just keep on playing on to the bitter end.

Think of Black Dragon, Choplifter, Tokyo, Ghosts and Goblins, Commando, Bubble Bobble, Gauntlet... I could list a few hundred here but you get the idea. Man, I could play those all day back in the days when it was cool to have a BMX bike !

But these days the arcades seem full of games that cost £1 a go, and only last to the end of the current race (what the hell is that all about ?), or until you die or run out of bullets.
Granted the graphics are way way better these days but I really feel that the playability has disappeared into the mists of time.

That of course brings me on to the question of how peoples taste in games changes with age.
As I have said I used to love the action packed arcade titles, and indeed I loved many a SNES game of the same type, but nowadays that really doesn't get me going. Sure I used to wait 5 minutes for a Spectrum game to load up for Gods sake.

Now I'm into long long games, with occasional action, that use a lot more brain power to progress instead of raw reflexes.

Why is that ? Can anyone tell me ?

I'm 30 now and I'm finding it harder and harder to really get into a game. Even all the new titles on PS2 are failing to drag me in for a quick fix. Yeah I can beat SSX but I really can't be bothered to complete every trick in every book just to see a new outfit. I remember a time when I used to collect every coin in SuperMario and be proud of the achievement.
Now it is just 'get to the end and move on'.

Could it possibly be true that I am getting too old for this type of thing ? God, I hope not.

Maybe the responsibilities of my age, and the work that I do has dampened my enthusiasm for the great games that are appearing every week ?

I've got PS2 and you can bet I'm getting Gamecube, but will I use either at all ? Or will they make a nice stand for a vase or something ??!!

Help !

Although the real reason may be that I'm working away from home and so I've no one to play games against during the week (they're all too serious in this place !!). Then when I get home all I do is talk to the fols adn go to the pub with the lads.... I'm not going to packup the PS2 every time I decide to drive home for the weekend... far too much hassle..

Anyway, as I say, there are plenty of games that I'm really looking forward to, maybe it's been too long since I bought something new.

One thing that could make all the difference is the internet connectivity for PS2, then I can play against my mates from anywhere.

Mind you, if you think things are slow in England, you should try the internet here in Ireland.... my God !!

I'm not as old as some here (24) but I still play my machine, and the excitement isnt fading yet, Though I definately don't play it like I used to.

Back at school I would catch myself playing Sonic on the MD till 3 most nights, but I play it less now. Probably because I do more than just play games. I ride motorbikes, play in bands, do pubs andf cinemas, all the things I was too poor to do at school.

You could be getting too old. Im 19 and have noticed I don't play games as much as I used to or as much as I would like too. The attraction of games is still there but I can't find the time to play as much anymore. Maybe thats the same, you probably have more important things to do.

Ghosts and Goblins was one of my favourite arcade games and its true alot of games don't seem to last as long or be worth the money in the arcades anymore.
Alot of games probably don't appeal to you much anymore but wait a while and see the line up of some of the up and comming PS2 games and maybe you might start getting the excitement back. Games like MGS2, stuntman, burn out, FFX, wwf smackdown JBI, tekken 4. And alot more.

That's what gets to me... I never thought I'd see the day.

But Chances are that I'll still be gaming in 10 years time.....

Maybe I need to new game to come along and grab my attention... I've got a lot of hopes for MGS2 and Silent Hill 2.

Also really looking forward to Perfect Dark in GC.

Same thing here.
Havent touched my PS2 for a game in a couple of months, it's a DVD player.

Been hammering the PC though. Cossacks, May Payne..games that take more skill and provide a mental challenge as opposed to whapping 7 shades out of an opponent.
Strategy games are becoming more appealing, and I recently took delivery of Train Simulator (Cheers Grix).

I like slower paced games that require thought and some planning more than I do flashy ones now.

What time is dinner?
