"Two fans of Judas Priest kill themselves because of subliminal messages...wow...two less gas station attendants in the world.
Trust me there will be no delay in the shuttle launch because of this folks, we didn't lose a cure for cancer. I don't mean to sound cold or cruel, but I am so that's how it comes out."
We've been howling at the moon since the dawn of time, and we're no different today.
"Lyrics made him do it" "Movies made him do it"
No, being a weak-minded sociopath made him do it. Let's not start blaming performers for society's ills eh?
Music is a form of entertainment.
Nothing more.
If lyrics were that influential, then let's all listen to Barry White and be a world of mellow, loved up smoothies.
But that ain't gonna happen, because we're always going to want to blame something exterior for things that we don't understand.
Easy option and a good excuse not to think or take responsibility for your own actions.
If you listen to a song or movie and think they're telling you to go out and commit wanton acts of violence?
That's because you are below normal intelligence and don't blame Marylin Manson.
Accept that you weren't blessed with brains and go rent Pauly Shore movies.
Don't ruin it for me.
I listened to death metal as a teenager, Deicide, Carcass etc and you know what?
Not once did I murder anyone, steal anything, praise Satan or dance around wearing the skins of others.
Why?
Because I have opposable thumbs, know that music is music and don't breath through my mouth.
End of story.
For most people the lyrics go over their head and they enjoy the song for what it is. However, On one hand you have the people who assume that certain lyrics or music is not suitable for release and or broadcast which in a way they are infringing on the artists freedom of expression.
On the other hand, the more sinister side, You have people who clearly must be suffering from some form of mental illness. How ever severe the persons level of illness, they interpret and manipulate the lyrics of the song until it triggers off something in their own mind that causes them to do something, whether this something is to murder or to cause harm to someone else or in most cases themselves.
I have mentioned to flips of the coin above but surly their must be some middle ground? Thinking back I am sure that at least one occasion I have commented on the lyrics of a song were "inapt" or indeed upon occasion I have interpreted a song in way that causes feelings of sadness but then who hasn't.Thankfully though and I'm going to be stereotypical here, like most ordinary people that is the most that I have swayed to either side of the argument.
My final thought is that, If you are feeling a little low and maybe even conteplainting doing something silly. Then please, please, do not listen to anything by Radiohead.
(ps. My final thought is supposed to be funny!)
