Also new connection to the internet is now available, a much higher bandwith can now be used like ADSL (advanced digital subsriber line). So what other possibilities are out there as well as on line gaming. It probably won't be huge aqt first as extra hardware is needed to get on-line such as modems(may have to be a high bandwith as some games may only support this), network adapter, ISP to let you get on-line. Also you need games that allow on-line play. It should get more and more popular as time passes though, just like what happened with DVD's.
One that I would like to see used in the future is updates that could be downloaded and stored onto a hard disk unit. Then if the developers want to add more to a game (instead of releasing a dodgy sequel with little changes they could release an update) Some will say it should be a complete game when you buy it and I agree but this would allow them to release a finished game and then spend more time creating new levels, weapons, characters, and maybe sorting a few missed bugs.
I don't want to see it turning out like some PC games were patches are required for download as the finished version wasn't up to scratch, this should just be a choice to thoose who want the extra option. This probably will happen as there are alot of good games that people would like to play more of. By releasing updates then people don't have to wait ages (sometimes a couple of years) for a sequel, they can play the extra levels in between. Also we may well see full games being able for download and maybe this could be the only way to obtain games, this could see a drop in piracy problems but could also see the end of games comming on disks.
In the future we probably will se more peripherals, the next big step may well be voice recognition, some games in Japan already use basic commands to perform certain tasks such as shoot or pass in football games. But this idea could become more popular as it would provide a better feeling of interaction with the game although I guess some games would be hard or not much fun if the only input was speach.
Also what about smells, well a company is working on a peripheral that mixes chemicals to create certain smells, this would add to the whole gaming experience. The choice of smells is set to include things like burning rubber (driving games) and rotting flesh for the likes of res evil.
These will only take off if developers choose to add the programming for them in their games but who knows we could be seeing them and using them some time in the future.
Also what about what games come on. We now use DVD's or small optical disks, the cartridge seems to be disapearing along with the CD and from a long time ago the tape. So whats next? Smaller sized disks like the GameCubes or could we see small disks like minidisks being used or will it be something completely different. Who knows we may have to download all our games and have no need for disks at all. One thing worries me though, if we eventually do have to download games, what costs could we be looking at, first the price to go on-line and the downloading time, also the cost of the game and what would happen if your hard disk failed and you lost all your games? Things that would have to be addressed if this kind of thing happened.
Artificial Intelligence could be used in games more in the future, we may even see a truely intelligent piece of software that is able to comunicate just like a normal average human, if this idea was used in games we could see a large leap into much more realistic games, no more predefined routes but just a large area open to exploring and completing taks in any order at any time. This could be big if it was ever to happen. Each game could be a little different as some may find places or things that others don't.
If you mention the future I guess you have to talk a little about the developers. Depending on how well the PS2, Gamecube and X-Box do will probably show which developers will continue in this market. Sony will probably have a PS3 and maybe a PS4 and its hard to imagine the games industry without Nintendo. If microsoft fail then they may just forget about it and stick with pc peripherals and software. But could we see new developers or a come back from sega in the future?
So what else could the future hold for the gaming world, more games, new consoles are the obvious ones, could we see and end to gaming and a move to virtual reality? As long as things happen for the better I'm not really bothered what happens. As long as I can still play games at a high standard that are fun to play then surely thats all that matters, or is it? So what do you see happening in the future?
Hope you enjoyed reading.
Imagine a game where you are the main character, it looks just like you in every way. Like voice recognition the next big one could be facial recognition. It could bring something special to the gaming industry, maybe not for some time but the possibilities are there. Also with options like create a wrestler in WWF Smackdown games the ability to make a character similar to yourself is quite easy and in most cases pretty realistic. This new technology could help make an identical game version of yourself you be used in the game. It would make the game alot more realistic.
But there could be problems with this that could prevent something like this happening in some games. Games where you get shot, killed or brutally attacked wouldn't go down well as its you that this is happening too, also games like GTA3 where you are the one causing all the damage. These could be seen as making them too realistic and making children believe that this type of thing is ok to do.
I would like to see this type of technology used when it is improved. Imagine fifa where you are part of the winning team, or first to shoot a basket in NBA, it could be hugely popular. That may not be for a while and by then the graphics and gameplay should have improved alot as we will be playing the next "next generation consoles"
Games seem to be getting more realistic as time goes on, and the graphics improve all the time, soon we could be seeing graphics like the ones seen in films like toy story 2, shrek and maybe even like final fantasy the spirit within.
As I mentioned before about games that have no pre-defined route, this should appear but there could be a few problems with this. All games need a start and an end, if there isn't some kind of route to follow then how can you get to the end without becoming very bored or annoyed as you can't get anywhere. What I think we will see becoming more popular is games that have a pre-defined route but also allows you to break of and explore different areas at different times without having to follow the usual A to B to C to D. Instead you could go from A to C to B to D, as long as you start at the start and finish at the end then you could have a realistic game where the gamer controls how and when you do things.
With the future there could also be a bad side, although this is unlikely to happen for a long long time it could happen. There could be an end to gaming. No more new games or consoles just what you have collected over the years. Who knows something bad could happen and games become illegal. Only a small group of underground gamers would have a console and games to play. I know all this is very unlikely but you never know.
Myself I'ld prefer playing 4 players around a TV to online gaming at present, but thats partially due to the hassle of getting online (and cost) and then ofcourse the fact that everyone has to have a similar setup for fair gaming.
All the next gen consoles have the ability to make this a possibility, the new PS2 and Xbox will both come with harddrives and built in modems. While the GameCube owners and old PS2 owners can upgrade their consoles in order to get online. This means online gaming will be a reality and fairly soon.
However in order for online gaming to take off deals will have to be done in order to make online gaming cheap, otherwise frankly nobody will bother. In the US Sony has struck a deal with AOL, meaning PS2 owners can get online easily. Microsoft will of course find it easy to get people onto their servers in the US, as its their home turf. That leaves Nintendo with an uphill struggle in the US market.
As for the UK market well thats a whole different story, BT are holding up the internet meaning we may have to wait a while till the benefits of a fast internet, and online gaming becomes big over here. This perhaps being one of the reasons why Sony so far has failed to confirm the release date of the new PS2 or the PS2 harddrive and modem add ons for the UK market.
This leaves only Microsoft with the only card to bring online gaming to the UK, as they own 33% of cable company NTL. Meaning unless BT and Oftel can get their act together Sony and Nintendo may never bring the advantages of online gaming to the UK.
Myself I hope this mess sorts its self out, as I would love to be able to play online on a PS2, GameCube or Xbox. As admittedly it would be nice to be able to play against my old friends on Driver3 or ISSProEvolution 3 even if they do now live 250 miles away!
As for voice recogition in games well Microsoft have announced that Plantronics will be making a headset for the Xbox allowing this feature in Xbox games. Knowing how on the ball Sony seems to be its a safe bet that a PS2 equivalent will materialise soon aswell, after all if youve got a broadband internet connection you may as well use it to talk to your friends while your beating them! :-)
I much prefer 4 people around a TV than

I agree, I don't quite see the point yet, Unless you don't have many friends. But my views could change once on-line gaming starts to become popular. Who knows what could happen.
I would like to see sony use the i-link feature more with multiplayer games as seeing GT3 with 6 consoles and 6 tvs it looked really good. Maybe on-line gaming will be better?

My fave gaming moment:
Last day of yr. 9. N64. Goldeneye. 4 pads. 4 people per pads, rotating everytime you die. Rules: first team to 100!
That was the greatest gaming moment of my life
