Spam is the most annoying aspect of the web, for me anyway. There have been proposals recently by the EU regarding oulawing it or at least passing some regulations regarding spam or junk email as they like to call it.

What do you think should be done to stop spam?

Opt in lists are one possibility. This would mean that we choose to get spam. You might think that it is absolutely crazy to actually choose to get sent spam. But it is not. www.mypoints.co.uk is a site that gives you points for being sent spam, and if you click on the link within the email you get 10 points. It can be very addictive trying to get as many points as you can. Once you have enough points then you can redeem them for gifts vouchers etc. This works well for all parties, advertisers get people who respond to adverts, mypoints (and similar companies) get customers who want to advertise and we get freebies from reading spam. That is the type of spam I like. That does not bother me to much.

I think that this is a good idea and one that benefits all parties. It is a better set up for internet and email users than the current get a new email address every month to stop getting so much spam (or is that just me?).

If any of you have better proposals on how to stop spam then lets hear them.

I would like people to support me in the campaign for the introduction of legislation making spam illegal apart from opt in lists so that we can possibly get attention. I will send this threads URL to computer active so they can see what people feel about the spam. It would be easier for us to just post here rather than all of us individually mail computeractive at [email protected]

Please support me, it will only make the net a better place if there is less spam.

Just imagine it, less mail equals less work for servers. Less work for servers would equal less demand on the internet as a whole leading to an increase in speed. Now would that not be good?

Thanks for reading and I hope that some of you support me. And an even greater thanks to them.

No that is SPAM which is made by a company called Hormel. It is a tinned processed ham sandwhich meat and is called SPAM because that was the winning entry to the naming competition. The guy won around a $100 dollars I think for it and I think he was called Ken. Oh and the use of spam for junk mail is due to Monty Python.
