I studied the book Great Expectations last year as part of my english course and decide to watch the modern version with Gwyneth Paltrow, Ethan Hawke and Robert De Niro to night. Although it was an adaptation did anyone who watched it and has read the book think it was a bit odd how certain things where changed. The Dickens novel does not really have a happy ending but this ending was holding hands in the sunset. I enjoyed the movie this evening but I was surprised as it was so loosely based on the novel that it kept its name. It is similar in a way to Ten Things I Hate About You(although this film was a bit to cheesy american) with the Taming of the Shrew in terms of it is an old classic brought forth into 20th century America. I think thaat these modern interpretations tend to work pretty well however they probably annoy many hard core literature fans. Great expectations far from being a film firmly linked to as tory branches out on its own and works well in its new environment. In my opinion this Is one of the better modern day adaptations. What does anyone else think of this type of adapting?

It maybe a bit sad but the ending has purpose the prophecy made by miss Havisham comes true and fulfils the purpose of the book and with out it it does take some meaning away from the film.

One of the best adaptations is Get over it aka A Midsummers night dream. It's incredibly funny but sticks to the plot very well, yet it's only afterwards when you think about it that you realise it is so closely related to the film!

I cannot believe that I forgot to watch great expectations. I was really wanting to see it. And I forgot. That's typical. BTW I dont like the ending that Dickins gave that story, it's too sad!
