There are a number of reasons why people or gamers choose the console that they currently own and there is usually a pattern to it. For instance a lot of gamers buy the same console by the same company over and over, and there is nothing wrong with that but they might not be doing it for the right reasons. If you bought a N64 and then bought an Xbox then people might frown upon your lack of decision-making or being ‘loyal’ to a company.
I usually buy a Nintendo console as they appeal to me most. I have purchased many Sega systems too which I liked as well. Nintendo’s games appeal to me as I love games which are a new genre in itself and they seem to do that well so I get drawn to that console, and I will definitely be getting a Gamecube but maybe that is due to the subliminal messaging running through my GBA. You see the use for them now Sony fans? As well as me many Sony fans bought their Ps2 because those games that happened to be available on it appealed to them in many ways and that is how the console war is decided between the public. Truth be told we all knew that really…
But I am mainly concentrating on Nintendo at the moment and why exactly people are attracted to their consoles and everything they do to help it all along as best as possible. If you’re lucky I might do some about Sony too so watch this space ----à <------.
Reputations!
In the market reputations are very important for sales to role in. Look at Skoka; they had such a bad reputation now they have started to take the mike out of themselves in the adverts! Nintendo started with a good rep and will have one for a very long time and would have to make about 5 crud consoles before people got the impression they had gone incredibly appalling. As they have made a good few consoles and so many revolutionary games it is no wonder that there are so many ‘Ninties’ around.
Advertising well!
As all companies will want to attract new gamers to buy their consoles it is no doubt that most are broadcasting advertisement on national television to give their product a boost. We see the Ps2 advert where they show you three games and which is the most hyped up. I have seen some Great Gameboy advance adverts to which poked me into getting one after the display of games on.
Consoles!
As we saw Sega drop out of the market a few months back (well only from hardware production in the future) we are now understanding how that it doesn’t make as much difference as we thought how good the games are but the console has to be a whole new gun in itself with all the ammo (games) along side it. Nintendo have made some stunning consoles and so easy to use etc, that its games were already lined up to knock down the front line of the enemy. Lets hope the useful consoles keep up guys!
Games!
Not as some say the most important thing but it is 50/50 with the console itself. To be as successful as Nintendo, which they are, you have to produce something never witnessed by the public. Ninty always make sure that their games or by Rareware are something new and a fresh genre, so everyone will be happy. Also they make sure that their sequels are even better than the first and usually don’t just add new modes but an original concept to the whole game too. They give you new modes and new in-game things to do which is why I like them!
Pricing!
Another very important thing to concentrate on and nowadays the public expect a new ‘next gen’ console to be £200 but no more and someone went over board. **Coughs** Sony **coughs** Nintendo usually make their consoles a very fare price but the games aren’t always the best pricing around. Of course as the new computer games get more powerful and polished they are going to get more expensive otherwise the company at hand would be ripping themselves off after a while. So No one is perfect at pricing but that’s the way it is going to be.
These are the reasons for which I buy a Nintendo console. I think that the explanation of it is justified and over all I just have a bond to Nintendo. Of course I do not hate any other company and am not biased I just favour one that is entirely standard. If They made a bad console and I could see it coming then I would steer clear and buy whatever else looked in high-quality shape but I hope that time never comes.

I don't know where you got that £40 figure from but:
I wouldn't mind. If the PS2 wasn't backwards compatible I wouldn't have sold my PlayStation, but considering I got £40 for that anyway I end up with the same deal.
On the whole, backwards compatiability is a huge bonus. I can keep playing all my old classics whilst enjoying new ones.

Yeah but the thing if the playstation 2 is bought by a Psone owner you can sell your old console to help you afford it and you get a great CD+DVD player too.
The new game prices are the cheapest ever in gaming history and with a budget range on the way with games at £15 once you get the console it's easy going but the N64 games are rocket high but i doubt since GC games are on DVD's the price should lower by alot.

The PS2 loads the games marginally quicker and the graphics are identical, beleive me i have tested it?

Obviously Sony wanted to increase it's PS1 franchise by appealling to non Sony buyers offering a huge back catalogue of game. I personally (being a non Sony buyer) would not buy a 2nd gen system and buy 1st gen games for it.

hehe. No, I simply wanted to make a point in the shortest time possible. I got a GBA early, simply because I was lucky and had an insurance claim coming in, but I probably would have found the money for a UK one anyway.
I did, however, manage to play one before buying, so I guess I could say that I bought it because I liked it, but part of the reason was that Nintendo has a good track record with handhelds and it was backwards compatible. It's probably the same reason why some people bought a PS2, and I imagine that most of them liked it as much, due to the fact that it's aimed at the same audience. I like what I've seen on the PS2 and it's just a matter of time till it comes down in price before I buy one.
