No, i think the ending is determined by items collected.

I've had the game for just 3 days and I'm WAY past you! :-P
Anysway, that Spider Ball is a long way off and only necessary for secrets.
After beating that plant boss you got your Varia suit which (and this wasn't explained so well in Prime but being a Super Metroid veteran **goes all smug**) protects you from heat so you can go into the depths of the Magmoor caves where the molten lava is! :-)
