What actually is Magicgate I've heard it can proect your game files but haven't heard anything since?

I think that Magicgate is supposed to some sort of encrpition/anti-piracy thing tied into the system for when you go online to download games you buy directly off the net onto the hard drive (if you had a broard-band connection that is)
I think it is coaded to match the individual PS2 so you cat find a way of downloading games from one PS2 to another only directly from the site you buy it from
