What is going to be the future of videogaming ?
With all the advances in technology today who knows what lies in the future ?

Sure PS2, XBox and Gamecube are all pretty impressive machines in their own right, but lets face it there does not seem to be any real advances in actual gaming concepts these days.

MGS2 looks fantastic and plays very well, but what is so innovative or inventive about it ? I know we can shoot ice cudes and stuff but if you sit back for a minute and think about that then what is the big deal ?
Malice looks great but is just another platformer.
SSX is brilliant fun but again is just another snowboarder, and oh dear there suddenly seems to be a dozen snow-based games in production. Come on people, just how many snowboard games are you going to buy ?

I must say Herdy Gurdy, while looking beautiful (if not a little childish), has tried to go in a new direction with its gameplay mechanics and concepts, but again didn't Lemmings do something very similar ?

Surely someone out there has a new idea for a way to design a game ?

If we remove some old concepts like
- platform
- fighting
- RPG
- racing
- FPS

then what are we going to be left with ?

I think the future of gaming will have to introduce more interactivity between the player and the game.
We need to get more immersed in the gaming enironment, to the extent that our physical actions will cause something in the game to change.... for example, imagine being in a game where you need to move an object. The object is large. You are wearing a glove that senses your strength. If you're not strong enough then you may need to get someone else to put it on in order to move the object for you.
Simple concept, but if it gets expanded a bit then it could make for some very interesting gaming ideas. Don't you think ? (Didn't some game company propose a suit you wear for fighting games, whereby your movements get reflected by your character ? where is it ? Again it is a good idea, but lets be reasonable, you'd need to be made of rubber to be able to beat any fighter in Tekken !!

And where are the VR helmets that used to be the 'next new thing' ? Wouldn't it be cool to play a FPS with a helmet on, so that all you head movements are reflected in what you see ?

Is there any hope that something new is on the way ? Or are we just going to accept better versions of tried and tested formulaic games ?

Don't get me wrong, I love the games that are out there today, but I just yearn for something new.

Does anyone out there know of something revolutionary on the way ?

Jester is a Figure Painter of outstanding quality. I noticed these on his site:

I think Steve might find it interesting.

I kinda dread the new peripherals coming out in the future, if they ever do.

Take your rubber Tekken suit, a great idea, one that's being toyed with for ages, but what will it do? Basically, we'll get all the old games rereleased for it, and they'll still just be beat 'em ups.

Next thing you know a treadmill will be brought out as an accessory for Virtua Athlete, and some bright spark will invent a 'football on a rope' for use with the FIFA '98 series.

It won't change the actual games, just the way we play them.

Fortunately, new stuff is coming out all the time, you just have to look for it. Tired of racing? Grab a fishing sim and put your feet up. Tired of beat 'em ups? Grab any number of the new puzzlers that are coming out every month and try something more hypnotic.

The one thing I DO notice is happening is that more games are coming out that can only be described as 'epic' in terms of scale. As the consoles get more powerful, the worlds in which we game become ever more interactive and non-linear, making exploration a big thing.

How about a Mount Everest climbing sim?
