One thing that this movie could never have was the 'WOW-factor' of the original. Yes the dinosaurs look as good, if not better than they did in the original, but they're not original anymore, so it isn't as impressive.
JP2 tried to combat this problem by taking a dinosaur off of the island, and into the city. It was a watchable movie, but certainly nothing special. This movie goes back to it's routes - people stranded with the dinosaurs, trying to escape alive.
I thought that this movie worked really well as a sequel, with many links and references to the earlier movies. For example, near the beginning we see Dr Alan Grant (Sam Neil) sitting in the garden with kids. We remember how he hated kids in the original, and think how sweet it is that he now has some. Then we realise that they aren't actually his, and he's split form the bird he was with in the original movie - maybe he realised just how big her nose was.
This isn't the only link to the other movies. As much as Jeff Goldblum was missed in this movie, his character did at least get a mention, with Dr Grant discussing Malcolms book with the kid.
Where this film is supposed to be funny, it is. The jokes may well be corny, but they are funny, and they rarely fail to raise a smile. Much better that the it and miss script of many similar movies.
Another factor that made this a decent movie was that it wasn't quite as raptor and T-Rex obbsessed as the earlier movies. It was good to see different dinosaurs used, especially the Pteradctyls. If that's what they were. They looked really impressive, and it was something that we hadn't seen in the series before, so it was refreshing.
The action scenes were of a high quality, and kept you on the edge of your seat.
Where this film succeeded, and where others fail, was in the characters. The majority of the characters in the movie where highly likeable, with William H Macy outstanding as the guy looking for his son. But hey, he had a big bushy moustache, and a side parting. How could he not be liked? Even the token kid in the movie manages to NOT be annoying! Now if that isn't a remarkable achievement for a Hollywood blockbuster, I don't know what is!
