I'm pretty sure US does work on the PC. I know of a couple of people that play it - and they love it.

Get the PC version - I'm waiting to find out if the US PC version will work over here. If it does, I'm buying it.
Darn it, ah well just have to wait for hell to freeze over otherwise known as the date the hard drive and FFXI gets released in Europe

Trust me , it won't work if you are using a chipped ps2 . An error message will appear . You have to be using an import machine , it will work then even if you are playing in the U.K .
