Sounds very similar to the GBA but with an extra screen if you ask me.
Still have my doubts over whether it'll be a success here. Should do well in Japan no problem though.
Anywho, Ninty are eager to state this is a 3rd pillar completely separate from GBA and GC.

Is this now confirmed? I didn't think so, but maybe I just haven't heard. Would be great though, although it'll make people think it's just the next GameBoy.
About the timeframe aspect, if the DS is released for Xmas this year, I think some will wait for the PSP in Spring 2005, but it's good Nintendo are getting it out (no pun intended) earlier than Sony. Although, that's only by accident, both were originally intended for the end of the year.

X and Y may still be configured.
And I don't think it's supposed to be like the N64... that's the job of the GBA2 I'm sure. It doesn't have to be a credible bussines idea, why can it not just be experimental hardware that may be included in the next generation of hardware if it goes down well. Like one massive international play test?
Game Boy Advance compatibility is a good step, but to sell the DS it's going to need something that is convincingly only possible on the DS.

A wireless Goldeneye conversion would be a treat with the analogue stick.
Although even with X and Y there wouldn't be enough buttons to match the N64's configurations.

Nintendo just need to release a few class games, get a few class titles from third parties and cause a monumental launch... it doesn't matter what it does in the long run... Nintendo aren't thinking long term here.
I covered this in "The DS damage". Nintendo creating a big launch means these new ideas could go down a storm and Nintendo will incorperate them into their next generation of hardware. imagine a new console with a wireless controller with an inbuilt screen that is touch screen... great for menus! Fantastic for stratagy games! Fantastic for multiplaying games! It would rule.
Also a fantastic new system that just seems so cool will kill Sony's big launch of the PSP... especially if it is delayed... which it is. The DS will slow down the potential success of the PSP... but will it be enough to allow Nintendo's true heavy weight... the GBA Next to come along and clean up the handheld market again? I hope so.
PSP is supposedly slipping into 2005.
And also I'm curious, aren't you?
