I’m 15 and just about to start my final year at high school. One of the subjects I have been doing recently is Business Studies. One of the exercises we had to do was looking at the sales of a computer company, and the most interesting thing to note was that in recent years, sales of PCs has dropped, indicating that the PC market is saturated. If your lost don’t worry, this just means that no one is buying PCs because we’ve all got them now. So that got me thinking, is there a future in IT? I often check out job vacancies online to see how much I could earn when I’m older and at the moment some jobs pay a small fortune, I even saw one that paid an amazing £250,000 and including a Merc/BMW, pension, BUPA health Care etc. etc. etc. And this was just the basic wage. You can imagine how chuffed I was when I read that I could earn that much!

But I was doing some work for someone the other week who was telling me about someone he knows who works in IT and says that he can’t see any future in his job. Nowadays most people have at least one PC in their house and have a variety of consoles as well so surely, at any moment the bottom is going to drop out of the IT Industry and mark the end of what is surely the computer revolution. The demand for PCs is dropping day by day because less people need them, and the other thing is that now experienced IT personnel are getting paid fortunes because they are in such short supply and there is such a huge demand, however, the next generation are mostly computer literate with many being experienced computer geniuses. So this means more supply, less demand. Do we really have such a secure future?

I really can’t decide. That argument is a very good one, but PCs are such that they will forever be improved and bettered. Hardware breakthroughs will come and go even faster than they do today, so surely people will need new PCs to keep up to date with the latest advancements and as new technology comes along, people who can use it will become in demand, or will they??

What's your opinion? I can’t decide.

I still think that computers are the way forward. Nearly all jobs these days require some sort if IT training. Even though computers sales are droping they won't stop as the technology is always being updated and geeitng better thus making people buy new computers to suppoort new software that will be brought out. It can usually be a better idea to buy a new computer when yours is out of date, rather than upgrading you old one. The reason for this is that adding new hardware to you old computer can sometimes cause conflicts between the components. Eventually computers will probably become useless and something new will be invented to use, but that is a really long way off and i doubt that any of us on these forums will ever see computers die off. If i were you i wouldn't really worry about the computer industry collapsing, just yet anyway. : )

The processor speed limitation barrier will appraently be reached in a decade or so, at around 10GHZ. At this point, the efficiency of the software code will become more important. Linux will become more popular, and microsoft executives will require regular trouser changes.

We probably will still need upgrades. I base that on the past performance changes and requirements following.

I could be wrong though...
