What with the internet community's intense interest in Nintendo's next move in the handheld gaming market, it comes as no surprise that rumours about the DS shoot around the worldwide web with astonishing speed. Currently making waves is a Dutchman's assertations of a name change, and some leaked info about what's going to be inside the dual-screen's casing.
The Nintendo Nitro moniker was suggested in a blog entry by a manager at EA's Netherlands branch. He pointed out that the Nintendo developer's website made mention of the name Nitro, and while one news site is suggesting that that name is also heavily used in the kits developers are receiving, Nintendo have been quick to scotch such rumours, saying that it was an abandoned internal codename. So that's the end of that, then.
Moving on, the leaked specs suggect that the DS will feature a touch-screen, along with wireless networking technology and a 3D graphics system. The wireless LAN will makes use of 802.11, which allows a number of units in a 50-100 metre radius to connect for some hot, multi-player action. This distance suggests that the Big N may have something more than simple multi-player in mind.
As previously suggested, the console'll feature two processors, an ARM-9 CPU running at 67Mhz and an ARM-7 running at 33Mhz. There'll be 4Mb of RAM for your gaming pleasure, along with 656Kb of video RAM. The most surprising aspect is that the DS will be capable of throwing around 120,000 polygons per second. While that isn't in PSP territory, it's still mighty impressive, especially if the Nintendo device carries the predicted lower pricetag.
