These are personal opinions of myself.
20. Alien.vs.Predator.
You get the opportunity to play as either Alien, Predator or Marine. Your mission is to take out the other 2 rathers, any way possible. Whether it’s gunning them down, gutting them inside out or burning them with acid spit.
19. Supreme Snowboarding.
One of the few snowboarding titles on the PC. Surprisingly, it is actually very good. There is a large array of tricks to pull off and you can get some big air. The single player mode is quite the challenge and will keep you going for hours. I hope to see more snowboarding games like this on the PC.
18. Swat 3.
You are the member of a 4 person Swat team and you must save hostages, arrest suspects and raid nightclubs. One wrong move could be the end, as one bullet will kill you. This is a challenge to gamers of even the highest level.
17. Kingpin: Life Of Crime.
Another classic gangster title. Your objective is to prowl around streets and practically raise hell. Careful what you say, or you may find someone hitting you upside the head with a baseball bat.
16. Cossacks: European Wars.
Strategic war in Cossacks. You get the chance to re-create famous battles. The graphics are good, compared to other strategy games, which seem to have excellent FMV sequences but shoddy graphics. Great stuff!
15. Age Of Empires 2: The Age Of Kings.
Have the chance to again re-create famous battle through time, including ones involving Joan Of Arc. The online compatibility is very good, which reaps some challenges of it’s own.
14. Urban Chaos.
Apocalyptic adventure set at the millennium. There is a prophecy that the end of the world will happen at the millennium. You have the unfortunate job of stopping this prophecy from happening. In the urban city, you get the beat, kill, run over and arrest criminals. An excellent game with nice graphics, despite it being a PS conversion.
13. Soldier Of Fortune.
Viewer discretion is advised! This game is not for the faint hearted. You are a cop and you have to kill all the bad guys, that’s what the storyline really is like! You can shoot off every body part of the bad guys, even decapitating them! Gruesome stuff. I found myself falling into a fit of giggles when there was a man with his 2 arms, 2 legs, head and torso splattered all over the room. A brilliant game!
12. Serious Sam: The First Encounter.
One of the very few FPS shooters around these days. You play Sam Stone, a superhuman stud, who is relied on to save the world from creatures. You will encounter deformed people who have no heads and other oddities and freaks of nature. The graphics are slightly disappointing but this barely takes away from the gaming experience.
11. Half Life: Opposing Force.
An add-on to the highly successful Half Life. You are still the moniker, Gordon Freeman, but it is a more extensive part of the game. There are more rooms and areas that were previously locked in Half Life. One of the best add-ons I have played. There is now a second stand-alone add-on called “Blue Shift”, which has even more unlocked areas, as you play a security guard in the Black Mesa Research Facility.
10. Half Life.
Of course, next on the list would have to be Half Life. As Gordan Freeman, it’s just another day at the Black Mesa Research Facility, until there is a time slip and you are surrounded by deformed monsters, out for your blood. You must use your wit and cunning to survive. If you do not conserve ammo, you won’t make it very far in this world.
9. Unreal Tournament.
Futuristic frag-fest in Unreal Tournament. It’s been out a long time, yet still a classic. There are stages to unlock in the 1 player mode that really gives you a will to keep playing. However, your attention should be adjusted to the online portion. This can be described with one word, amazing! Fragging 20 other people on a spaceship really brings UT into it’s own. It will take a lot to beat this and lets hope that the next Unreal game is even better.
8. Star Trek: Elite Force.
You now have the chance to re-create old episodes of Star Trek Voyager with this Star title. All the weapons from the series are there, with a lot of delightful extras. Trekkies and fans of the series will lap this up. The online play should not go unnoticed. It has some great maps and it has very low limitations, especially on the number of players you can have at once.
7. Alone In The Dark: The New Nightmare.
The fourth instalment of this great series has now reached us, with excellent results. Jam-packed on an amazing 4 discs, Alone In The Dark 4 brings you jumps to rival that of Resident Evil. You have the choice of 2 players, either a man or a woman, thus creating a non-linear plot. The graphics are possibly the best I’ve ever seen. When you flash your light around, the effect looks very cool. Brilliant game!
6. No-One Lives Forever.
The first thing that came to mind when I played this was, this is so similar to Austin Powers. The characters even look the same, with a look-a-like of Fat B*stard. There is someone in the intelligence force, UNITY who has been systematically killing off spies. You have to find the person perpetrating this crime, and kill them. However, this will not be an easy task. The enemy AI is very good and you can’t heel during missions. Only a British game could come up with the humour implemented here. A blend of humour and action, gracefully moulded into one makes for great playing. This game is also compatible online, and it excellent. I love running over someone from Australia with a snowmobile, crushing their body completely, then seeing their body fly off the windscreen.
5. Black And White.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, you’ve heard of Lionhead Studio’s latest project. You play god. A simple task at first but you can really get ingrossed after a while of playing. After doing a tutorial and helping ( or hindering ) the villagers, you can choose a creature, either a Tiger, Cow or Ape. Then, the villagers will ask for help and you will often need your creature to help them. You can choose to scatter the village with rocks, killing half the population, or planting trees in the village, thus making them happier. It’s up to you, be bad or be good, your choice.
4. Quake 3 Arena.
Simply a classic frag em’ up. Despite the fact that you can play against the computer, I think that this game is really intended for internet play. With a decent connection, you can rack up the frags and call yourself the master of Q3A. I suggest getting at least a 56k line for this, and even with a 56k, it can still be a bit jolty. Once you have a good connection, the fun never stops.
3. The Sims: Livin’ It Up.
Another add-on for the Sims. You get over 150 extra object, 4 new neighbourhoods, loads more careers and more houses to choose from. However, I installed the game over the top of the Sims, like you’re supposed to and I found absolutely no extras at all. No electric guitars, no beds. If anyone has any more info, then please contact me at [email protected].
2. The Sims.
This game is so addictive, it’s unbelievable! Another chance to play god, or a TV director, as you control the lives of up to 10 people per household. You can have 1 person, which is easy to handle, or 10 people in 1 house, big brother style and does it get difficult or what? There are hundreds of items to choose from. I would have preferred a better variety rather than more of the same category but hey, whatcha gonna do about it? I was miffed about the number of houses, only about a measly 5. However, there is a remedy. There are countless add-ons, 3 that I can remember, which give you new neighbourhoods, more items and careers. If stuck on a desert island with only 3 games, make this one of them!
1. Project IGI.
More Metal Gear Solid-like action with a great release by Eidos Interactive. This is possibly one of the hardest games I have played. It only takes a very gunshots and you’re dead. Hence why you have to be very sneaky. Luckily, there are guns that can zoom in and snipe out targets. There are 13 levels crammed of excitement. In the 6 months I’ve had it, I’ve managed to get to level 8! Thankfully, to make up with the difficulty, you are spoon-fed information by your advisor and you receive a handy map with the locations where you need to go. Buy this game today!
Well, there’s my PC Top 20, what do you all think? Do you agree? Do you disagree?
