You start out in a little village; you have some starting weapons and an old man who will give you quests. The idea of the game is to go out on these quests to kill all sorts of creatures from bugs to dinosaurs to huge dragons. As you progress through the game you must get new armour and weapons to deal with the ever-increasing difficulty of the creatures you will face.
This is a Hack n’ Slash game, you simply must hit the creature over and over till it dies sure it sounds a bit barbarian, but good lord is it fun.
You can choose to change your weapons before a quest so you can pick the right tool for the job, these vary from huge great two-handed swords, massive hammer, short swords with shields, lances and even guns.
Each weapon will require you to fight in a different way as the same tactic will not work for all of them. Guns will need time to reload and shorts swords will require you to block, as you won’t always have time to move out the way of a tail, claw or mouth. It is important that you find the right weapon for you, you need to look at if you like power but with slow attacks or speedy attacks but much weaker.
The weapons are only half the battle, your armour is probably more important as when hit (and you will get hit a lot) your armour is all that stands between you and failing the mission. Armours all look different and some are resistant to some attacks so again picking the right one for the quest you are on is very important. Some can stop you from getting poisoned others will reduce the amount of damage you take when you are hit by a huge fireball or lightning or even a jet of water.
This game although is a Hack n’ Slash style is also an action RPG even though your character never improves stats or levels the items you use do improve. You can not simply go to a shop in the town and purchase the next weapon up, you have to supply all the materials to improve your weapons, this means fighting bigger and stronger monsters to get hides or claws to add to your weapons.
You are a hunter and at first it won’t really feel like it but after a few hours you realise that you are learning the way the creatures fight you know where they go to drink, eat or sleep and you know when to attack them. As well as killing quests there are also carry and capture quest. Carry quests require you to steal and egg or another item and carry it back to base. This often means you move slower and if you are hit the item breaks so learning map layouts can help to get it back safely. Capture quests require that you weaken a Wyvern to the point that you can put a trap on the floor and then it walks over it, it will fall in and then you can put it to sleep.
Graphically this is probably still the best looking PSP game yet, and some areas will make you wonder why other games look the way they do when this is possible. The audio in the game is brilliant and headphones are a must as the sound will tell you where everything is in a zone without you having to turn around.
Unfortunately there are some downsides, the camera angle takes a long time to get use to and controlling the camera is the one issue most people will complain about as it requires that you use the analogue stick and d-pad at the same time. Loading is another thing some people won’t like, each zone in a map has loading between it, it’s only a few seconds but impatient people complain a fair bit about this even though really you need to the time to work out your tactics anyway.
This is a must for PSP owners and a sequel it due at the end of the year, which with this is the only reason I still have my PSP.
