I shall soon have a (free) TV in my room with ma supa cool PC. When I get broadband, could I just change the cable whenever I needed to between Xbox and PC rather than forking out for a router?

He was actually close.

What you need is a broadband modem that connects to the PC via ethernet. All cable modems do as far as I know. However most ADSL modems use USB. If you get a USB modem then you can't connect the Xbox to the modem directly. If it uses ethernet, then you can.

The other way around getting a router, using a USB modem, is to fit a network card to your PC so that it has an ethernet port and use Internet Connection Sharing (ME onwards).

Don't know what a USB socket has to do with this.

If your modem is Independantly powered, then whether you have a USB or an ethernet port on your PC matters not as you can plug the ethernet cable from your modem into your Xbox.

If your modem has an Ethernet socket and a USB socket then yes you could but some modems dont run the internet by a USB cable.

Depends where the modem is... If you want to use both at the same time or it's like mine and downstairs then i would have to swap the wire from pc to xbox/xbox to pc, walk downstairs, turn it off, wait a few seconds, turn it back on, walk back upstairs, then i should get a router, but if you are fine without, there is no need.
