So I did as any lover of games would do. I proceded up stairs to play. First up was golden axe. A 2 player with my girlfriend (My proof that girls do like games, she owns a mega drive too) and we kicked butt big style. I had played this game so many times on the amiga and to see the ending where they all chase the boy out the arcade was just priceless.
We then put in streets of rage, one of my girlfriends favourites, to say she was better than me would be an understatement. At times I just watcheed amazed at how good she was. We played this until we got kicked out the house.
All this left me with some thoughts.
1. With all the new consoles out now, people probably just overlook the old consoles. But there are alot of good games that children are missing. If you are really interested in games in general then I advise you to get your hand on some old classics (old consoles are cheap or you can download them and play on PC emulators). I wouldn't like to see kids these days missing out on so many games that brought me so much fun as a child.
2.The old debate about female gamers. Some are good, as i found out and they do enjoy it. They just don't seem to count it as being as important as it is to most of us males. A bit like shopping for them. They love it to bits and us males just do it when we need to.
3. Probably the bigest thought I had was what changes games can make to your life. Do they have the ability to make you a better person or a worse person. I thought about this for a while. All of my friends who have consoles and who have played games for quite a long time are decent people. They aren't trouble makers, they don't get mixed up with gangs and drugs and most go out of their way to do things for others. My opinion is that games can help us become better people and they can give us skills and knowledge that can come in useful in life. Probably the most important is good hand-eye co-ordination, but Im sure we get alot more from video games.
Alot of people say games encourage violence (Usually people who haven't played games say this) but I think society would be a far worse place if games weren't around. Games like GTA may seem a little violent and go against some peoples morals but games like this give us the change to do things like this in a virtual world. Do things without the danger of being caught, injured or even killed.
Games have had a positive effect on my life and who knows what would have happened If I had never been given the chance to play them. So what do you all think. Can games effect your life and make you a better person?
Please let me know what you think.
Thanks
