Currently there are 3 main players in the next console war. The PS2, the GCN and the X-Box. Many debates rattle around these very forums saying which machine is going to win the war, which will have the best games and so on, but there is so much hype and speculation going around the forums have decided to back off until the judgement day of releases.

When this day comes the forums will light up with posts about “Yeah, My GCN is the donkeys danglers” or “The X-Box is as fat as a fat heffa”, yet despite this, there will be people saying “oh. Its a bit of an anticlimax...”.

There and many people that feel that the PS2, regardless of the games that have been made being beautiful, feel that it diddnt live up to the hype. "The pre-order system was a sham!"... "the games were all sequels!" ... "blub-de-blub-de-blub..." ... What were you expecting? Some kind of genre-defining uber-console that would make your bed when you got up and prepared your breakfast? No. You were expecting a (convection heater esque) console with PS1 pads, and 4 times the power of the PS1. You got that. There is no complaint there. The reason that it didd’nt live up to your expectations is because the expectations were too high, and they were that high because we all got over-excited about what was said by the manufacturers before release.

The GCN. We all know that its this will be a great little machine, yet many are crying "Its amazing!". Annoying as this is generally, this is made worse by the fact that the machine isnt out yet, and nobody has played one. Our entire reconings are based on some screenshots and some press releases. See the similarity so far? Note there is a number of sequels in the line up? Its all sounding a bit familiar.

This is really a note to say, please dont overhype the GCN. I have a PS2, and am not really interested in buying another machine, but I still want to see it become the great machine it looks like it could well be. When it comes out I want to say "Wow! It’s so much more than I expected!", Not "Well, i heard it could do this and it doesnt...".

Anything, not just consoles, anything that excels the expectations of the punters has to be congratulated, but if it doesnt make it it is slated. Just be careful that you dont make the bar too high amongst yourselves, just in case the GCN can’t jump that high.

The thing about hype is, it runs like a tap until you turn it off.

Take a look around you and ask yourself where the hype comes from, you'll find it's mainly from us here, because we're pretty much, with very few exceptions, all game fans, dedicated ones, or else we wouldn't be here.

We've all got gaming in our blood, it's a bond thing, and so we tend to get very excited about anything new or different that comes around that stands a chance of making our blood pump a little faster.

Then you have internet advertising, one of the fastest growing forms of marketing the world has ever seen, but you don't HAVE to click that NGC banner, you don't HAVE to click that MGS2 promo video link, because deep down the only place you are going to get the facts are from the official sites themselves. All the rest is speculation and gossip, which, when added together with rabid gamers like ourselves, turns into hype.

For me personally, the only thing around at the moment that really gets me excited is the X-Box, because I look at the others and see 'same specs' no matter how many times you add a nought or play with the pixel counts. The X-Box on paper looks dramatically different, a lot of that has to do with the way it's structured from the hardware point of view, so it's new, it's different, it's something that promises something else in the world of gaming, the way Sony did with the PSX, although to be fair the X-Box could never hope to match the impact that the PSX had when it entered the market over half a decade ago.

It's the same with games, because I'm pretty much selective in which sites I go to for information on releases (I normally visit the official site or the developer's site directly), so I don't get the feverish hype that the gaming press tend to froth out, or the 'This is going to be the Greatest!' headlines that tend to drop through my inbox each morning.

Even when the 'Slap your monkey' campaign started surrounding Black and White, which had been in the works and hyped to the hilt by the press, I wasn't that fussed about it.

It pays to wait, and not jump in and buy every single game you've seen advertised or talked about. It also pays to learn how to form your own opinions. Most of all, it pays to get lots of opinions from the people here, because these forums are a WEALTH of opinons, and thankfully they are not all the same, they are wildly different.

About the only thing we ALL agree on is that gaming is a fun way to pass some (or a lot) of time.

since you own a ps2 you should know by now that the pads are very different, i think a force feedback controller should be arriving some time on the future too.
