i did that as well. I've bin playing df black hawk down since the demo, (about a year ago) and you select sides way before joining a server.
Haha, you must be new to online gaming then, I remember I did the same when I first played Day of defeat, my first online game. I thought I could only spectate when really all I needed to do was pick a side and join the game, it's really not that difficult.
