*Foreword: Thanks for your, umm, help guys. I still have no idea what to write about so I’ll write an introduction and see how I feel.*
Well, this is my “challenge” post, where I will go in depth into one good aspect of the GameCube. This is really, really hard, as there is absolutely nothing I like about Nintendo. I mean, from the launch line up there is nothing that appeals to me that I can’t get on the PS2 before the GC is launched. I don’t like the colour, I don’t like Nintendo’s attitude, they’re no more original than Sony, as if I care about that anyway, the graphics are the same, the controller’s virtually identical, there’s not as many games, there are no developers that I like and most of the big games are for younger gamers. It’s not that I’m a biased/die-hard Sonyphile, it’s that there’s really nothing I like about Nintendo. Maybe if it was Sega, but not Nintendo.
*Hmm, OK. I still can’t think of a good point yet. Ah! Alrighty, I’ve thought of something! I’ll write about Nintendo’s quality over quantity attitude.*
OK. Nintendo do have some strong points. They’ve got a huge following, they’re original and they’ve got a quality over quantity policy. One thing I don’t like about the PlayStation (yes, they’re something!) is every month there seem to be loads and loads of reviews, but there’s usually only one game that gets 8/10 or more. So far, the PS2 hasn’t had any perfect 10s yet, even though the PSone had many. Looking down the PS2 games database right now, I see only 26 games worth buying, out of 106. That’s a measly 24%. Now, if it was a Nintendo PlayStation 2, you could just about bet that 80%-90% of these would be worth buying, although there would be less games. I really admire Nintendo’s quality assurance policy. If you were to walk into an SR club shop and pick a random N64 title off the shelves, chances are it’ll be good.
Many people keep saying to me how the PS2 has no good games, or they had a PS2 and they sold it. I ask them why and they say the games were crap. Well, I keep saying to them they’re buying the wrong games. People use TTT and Ridge V as examples, but they’re both poor games that have been over-hyped so people buy them. People buy the hyped games and complain that they’re crap. They don’t read reviews in magazines, and they don’t know what’s good and what’s not.
Nintendo gamers, however, won’t suffer from this, because almost every game you can buy will be great. Initially, I reckon 66% of the GC’s launch titles will be good, and this is great for Nintendo gamers. As long as you stay away from those horribly repetitive EA sports games, you’ll be fine.
This strict quality assurance policy is very brave of Nintendo. Because of it, there are loads of great games but not really that much choice. Some people criticise them for this but they stick to their guns and stay with the quality over quantity attitude. By not letting 3rd party developers release games on their console (this links back to Dringo’s post) they can keep a tight hold on the games that come out. Therefore, while the metaphorical fountain of Nintendo games doesn’t flow that strongly, each drop of water is pure filtered Highland Spring water with all the little bits handpicked out little imps with pointy ears and-

Ahem. So, that’s one good thing about Nintendo. Now, I’m going to go and play on GT3 for the rest of the day to regain my faith in the big S. I think I’ll also write a letter to Phil Harrison pleading for forgiveness. Hmmm, the Grand Valley 300 should do it…
