I have cut my top 10 down to just four - hope you like reading them:
Best classic: The Exorcist:
The Exorcist is an old film now, but it remains as one of the greatest of all time, it was banned for 25 years from being released on video, which must say something, it’s a really impressive production, that I would recommend you do watch if you haven’t already. “Based on a true story” how true is that statement? Well, it is slightly true, but the actual incident happened to a boy, not a girl, and naturally it wasn’t anywhere near as powerful/shocking as the actual film – the boy supposedly faked it all because he hated school, anyway, just remember this sort of thing is highly unlikely to happen in real life – just enjoy the film for what it is though.
So, basically the Exorcist is about a girl who becomes possessed by the devil or some demonic presence, the mother, a film actress, is horrified, seeks all the help she can, the doctors don’t believe that she is possessed, or at least they don’t want to, and the girl, played by Linda Blair, is given lots of injections, hopefully to rid her of the ‘illness’ that she may have, as the doctors cannot accept she is possessed. The film is gripping – it’ll have you transfixed, the storyline is absolutely superb, the directing and producing – the whole production is a masterpiece.
A priest is called in to have a look at Regan (the possessed girl), he’s their last hope, and as calm as he is, talking to the devil inside her, he needs to ask for the girl to be exorcised, another priest is brought in to help perform the exorcism, and wow – the acting is superb, even the camera tricks, ‘special effects’, they’re way ahead of their time – The Exorcist will have you gripping the sofa, you won’t be scared as such, just engrossed – it’s such a well made film, based on William Peter Blatty’s original novel.
The film will shock you, the way it’s been done is sublime – Linda Blair’s acting was incredible, the whole atmosphere given out by the film is quite brilliant, it is a story of good versus evil, the church is involved, people do get killed, but you will be sorry if you do not watch this movie.
A 5 star movie/film without question – a must see.
Best Spoof: Scary Movie:
Scary Movie is a very funny spoof film, it’s based on Scream, with elements of the Matrix, the Blair Witch Project and I know what you did last Summer – it’s an incredibly silly film, not at all scary, but really quite clever and will make you laugh at times. Scary Movie doesn’t take itself seriously in any way at all, the plot isn’t important it’s never really quite there, but it doesn’t matter in any way at all!
Scary Movie wasn’t as amazing as I thought it would have be, there is lots of humour, some very crude but it’s just a very silly movie – purely housing the same story as scream, with the scream man getting into all sorts of trouble, it’s not a must see, but it’s a laugh for an hour and a half.
The acting is good, but as in all spoof films, you can never take anything seriously, which is why Scary Movie is so successful – staring Shannon Elizabeth – from American Pie, Marlon Wayans from Senseless, Carmen Electra from Baywatch, Jon Abrahams from The Faculty, Shawn Wayans and Cheri Oteri as well – making it a great line up of actors and actresses ready to make you laugh. There are many jokes that you’ll miss, it’s a very sarcastic and satirical film, with some loveable characters, most of who get killed by the ‘Scream’ man – but who is the scream man? I won’t spoil it for you…
It will make you cringe at times, it will make you laugh, it’s not the most outrageously funny film I have ever seen, but it’s a good laugh, and something to pass the time by.
Best Action: Blade:
Blade is one of the greatest action thriller films I have ever personally watched and right now, this very second I recommend that you watch this film if you haven't seen it already.
Even at 3 years old, Blade still has some of the greatest special effects ever seen in a film and I can honestly say that this is Wesley Snipes' best film to date. It has everything - superb acting, superb music, lots of blood, excellent fight scenes and a stunning, tense and gripping story line. Nothing to do with vampires is this good.
Blade was born as a half human half Vampire as his mother was attacked or raped by a Vampire, I forget now, but either way it has made him into what is known as the Day Walker - all the strength of the Vampires, but he can walk in the day too. Blade is a good guy - he's solid, fast and he's also human too - he saves the life of a hospital worker, who will probably be in the second film, and his mission is to rid the world of the scum that is Vampires.
The special effects are absolutely mind blowing - incredible blood scenes, lighting effects and superb costuming - you wouldn't want to get one the wrong side of Blade. However, Blade has a weakness - he needs to keep taking a serum in order to stop having the lust to take blood - the serum's effects on him become less and less, so he gets weaker too.
Blade has a good friend in whistler, he makes the guns, blade uses them!
"We have a good arrangement, he makes the weapons, I use them"
Superb acting - Deacon Frost, played by the fantastic Stephen Dorff, is the nuage Vampire - he's not pure blood, and he's not stupid either. For ages he had been trying to unlock a secret ancient vampire code, one that the pure bloods couldn't crack, this code would supposedly unleash the blood god, and cast darkness on the world etc - you know the idea.
Anyway, the nuage vampires kill the old ones, take over and attempt to get Blade out of the picture - I won't spoil the rest, it's a stunner of a film, shockingly amazing and something that you will see again and again.
Has one of the best openings - one of the best plots, twists, endings and music - Bass in the place (London). Basically, it's incredible and I cannot wait to see the next one.
Bring it on Blade 2 Bloodlust!!!!!
Best All round film, with greatest revelation in special effects: Jurassic Park:
Jurassic Park is now 8 years old, has spawned 2 really good sequels and still is one of the best films I have seen!! The new film, Jurassic Park 3, is a brilliant film, but it all started back in 1993 with the original, a film of epic proportions, something that broke all the records and remains highly enjoyable to watch today.
Storyline - a brilliant story that starts off with a brilliant opening seen - the Raptor seen is fantastic, the meeting Alan Grant and his girlfriend in their digging spot - everything is very well done, gripping and just evolves as the film moves on - as with every film there has to be a problem, and that problem is Dennis Nedry and his associate Dawson, who attempt to steal the heavily guarded Dino DNA, so that another group of people can start breeding them....
So, while the Jurassic Park creator - played by Richard Attenborough, shows the guests round, to help endorse the park, the mallicious goings on bring uproar - in order to get the DNA, Nedry has to shut down some of the Dinosaur paddocks, and thus all hell breaks loose - it's a really exciting and fantastic adventure that really is groundbreaking in more ways than one.
Special effects - amazing, even now they look impressive, with 'realistic' dinosaurs and effects, although there is a point where someone's arm (the body, already consumed by the Raptors) falls on one of the characters, it looks very fake. But let's not dwell on that. The T Rex looks incredible, I do not know what Dinosaurs looked like, no one does for sure - they didn't leave us any video evidence at the time - but it looks so, so very stunning. A top film - revelation in special effects.
Sound and music are another very important aspect that make a film good, and thankfully Jurassic Park, directed by the brilliant Steven Spielberg, based on the novel by Michael Crichton (hopefully spelled right), houses some wonderful music and soundtrack - really very good indeed, and suits the film to a tee. The sound is also very clear, great dinosaur roars and very clear voices from all. Brilliant.
The acting is first rate and there are many likeable characters - Sam Neil plays Alan Grant, Richard Attenborough plays John Hammond, and Jeff Goldblum plays Dr Malcom, starring in the second film. Acting is excellent, the dinosaurs learned their lines well, and some classic quotes are to be had from the film:
"You'll never get Grant..."
Why?
"Because Grant's like me, he's a digger"
And then Dr Monroe, who gets killed by the raptors in the end...
"Shoot her! Shoot her!"
Brilliant.
