With all the hype about the HDD and the future possibilities of online gaming,we all wonder if it is all going to take off and whether it is going to work as Sony intend it to.
Unsurprisingly, people were a bit sceptical about Internet gaming when the Dreamcast came out. People wondered if it was going to challenge PC for the Internet gaming crown. It was a bit ambitious of Sega to try and get people to play games online on their new machine rather than on the PC.
But there was nothing wrong with online play on the Dreamcast. It worked, it ran considerably smoothly for a console and with games like Phantasy Star and Chu Chu Rocket it was proving to be FUN.
But there was a problem. First one was the cost. Many people could not afford the cost after splashing out on the console itself, games and accessories etc.People also did not fancy paying for playing online AS WELL as their normal Internet connection and other costs.
The second problem was that people did not find playing games online using a Dreamcast as appealing as using a PC. So for example, many people decided that playing Q3 on the PC was better than on the DC.The were more options, more people online and loads of other factors like being able to download patches and so on.
Unfortunately the Dreamcast sales never took off, more people decided to buy a Playstation or wait for a PS2. Dreamcast wasnt able to establish regular sales unlike the PSone, even after the Sony console started showing signs of old age.And when the PS2 appeared on the horizon, people have turned their sights onto the Black Box.Dreamcast never really took away any attention that Sony got with their machines and even the price drop to attract more customers failed to make any big impact on the sales chart.
And now with the PS2's online plans being announced, people begin to wonder if the PS2 will follow the same path as the Dreamcast took so naively. But Sony always learn from other peoples mistakes, providing that they dont make too many of their own. They decided to make the experience of online gaming more fun and user-friendly. They also thought about browsing the net, when they recently introduced the Network Adapter for the machine.
And another plus point of PS2's online prospects is that the connection is going to be Broadband. As many of you know, Broadband pushes data down multiple paths simultaneosly, thus making browsing the net much quicker and efficient. For example downloading a webpage with a Narrowband connection would take 14 seconds, and only 1.6 seconds with a Broadband one.
But again, will people decide to spend their hard-earned cash on the Hard Disc Drive, several other accessories needed for online play and browsing the Web, cost of the connection etc. Especially after spending a hefty fee for the console and games. I believe that online gaming on a PS2 is not going to be huge until a few years time when companies will have the courage to develop games for online play. Many developers are not too sure if they should risk it and make some games that would be playable online. It is not very easy to do something like that and many developersn regard the topic quitre wearily. There are loads of things to consider when making a game like that. Apart from actually designing the levels , modes and mechanics, they will have to think of slowdown, connections, servers etc.So many are waiting for other companies to bring out games that will be the first online experiences for many. "Lets wait and see if everyone else manages it" is their favourite phrase at the moment.

And that brings me to my point. Will people actually bother? I will, but only if I am sure that its going to be good, there are no problems or slowdown in games and that its actually worth it. I am not going to to spend £300+ for something that might be forgotten in couple of months time.I certainly hope that it will make an impact on the PS2 future, but I am not to sure if it is THE future of the beloved black box. I think it is too early to judge the Online play while Sony are still thinking everything through...

Anyway I hope I didnt bore you lot and I hope I expressed myself clearly. So could you please reply and let me know what everyone thinks.

Have a nice day!!!!!!!

Exactly what I mean. I doubt that many people are going to pay that much money unless a monthly connection of some kind is introduced

The only things Sony need to do is make some fresh games and your average PS2 owners isn't able to afford heavy phone bills from playing games for several hours a day so a deal with unlimited use at a stable price would be useful and to not overcharge people for the hard drive and modem.

the dreamcast was great online, even though it's modem was slow it still managed to give fast access but the only tings you could do with it is surf and play online but with the PS2's hard drive you can do SOOOOOOO much more.

can't wait!!
