Sorry about ther cheesy title there... :)

I was wondering what games of recent times (last couple of years) do you think will be considered the classics of the future?

Half-Life?
Deus Ex?
Conker?
GT3?

And what games of old do you think ARE todays classic titles?

Elite?
Mario Bros?
Sonic1?

Any ideas?

Very different question here man...

I'm not asking for a description of what a classic or what a retro title is...

I'm wondering what GAMES, specificly are classics...

Not what a clasic game is...

My my, several topics posted and still essentially asking the SAME question...???

What is it about Retro, Classic etc that we must justify titles to classify these era`s?. As you know, my views on this tend to side with the idea that no game is retro or classic if you still enjoy it in the present ie: if you like loading up Raid over Moscow on your trusty old Commodore 64 and are still playing it today, still finding it a challenge (as long as you can get out of that blooming hanger at the start!) and then go on to play a quick game of Quake 3 Arena online with some mates, then whats the problem? Are you going to stop playing one of them because its become "retro" or the other because everyone claims it will become a "classic"??? No, i don`t think so.
Most people stop playing because they either complete a game or get bored of it.
Then someone else labels it in years to come proberly judged on its performance, y`know - word of mouth and all that, it can easily make or break a game as much as a good/bad review in a mag. If it makes it, its a "classic", but if it fails it will only be remembered in years to come as "retro", which i think is sad.

All formats have had great games on them, some have been milestones in computer game history. Its how we deal with the aftermath that dictates what happens to the games. If we keep with this retro or classic idea, will we end up with future games being devoid of inspiration for fear of copying an older idea, or simply that all the good ideas become stale and boring,or that developers do not wish to move on and stick to the "tried and tested" method of games manufactuer.

Games I consider as classics?

PC:
Doom and Doom 2:
These games are to me, the scariest ever released. Not because of any effects like dead bodies or because of the dark and spooky levels, but because of the element of suprise the enemies bring on. I've often thought I'd fragged all the enemies in a certain part of a level, only to find that when I return there, six have respawned! When you are quickly running somewhere to get to a new part of a level, these can give you a slight shock which makes you move in your seat. This game is definately a classic FPS and will always be a classic.

Command & Conquer:
This game is a brilliant strategy game. Based in the present, the tanks are well designed and the game engine works brilliantly! Starting a mission with very few troops having to build an entire army from virtually nothing, and harvesting Tiberium to gain revenue. This game wasn't the first of it's kind, but it certainly is one of the best and that's why it's a classic.

Game Boy:
Tetris:
This game was based on Pentominoes and created by a Russian man. His idea has made him very rich in the gaming world and that's just for his Game Boy game! The aim of the game is to make rows of blocks disappear before the screen gets full to the top. To do this you need to complete a row without gaps. If you manage to get rid of four rows at once, you have managed to do a tetris. This game is still very popular and has been seen in arcades, on the PC, and is also on the N64!

Super Mario Land:
This Game Boy game is often confused with the game Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Land features Mario, who has to travel through different levels trying to save his precious Princess Daisy. This game is based on the original Super Mario Bros game, however there are slight differences, like at the end of a level there are two exits. One takes you to a bonus level whereas the other just finishes the level.

SNES:
The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past (Zelda 3):
This game is my all time favourite. It has huge levels and dungeons and brilliantly designed bosses. This RPG may be the thrid in the long running series of Zelda games, but it is the best. It is totally original and is so playable that you'll never want to get off!

Super Mario World:
Another based on Super Mario Bros, this game features Yoshi as a main character which Mario can find and ride. This game has lots of cool levels and features life-saving mini-games. It's original and it's excellent!

Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance:
Pokémon:
This series of hgames will never completely die out. There are just so many Pokémon to catch and train that you'll never fully complete it without the aid od a cheat cartridge. I consider Pokémon a classic because it is a very famous and well known game that nearly everybody loves to hate!

F-Zero: Maximum Velocity:
Fast paced racing with no room for mistakes. Although this game is similar to the SNES game F-Zero, it's still got it's own feel that makes it seem like an original game. It uses the same game engine and similar graphics and that's why it is still a success.

N64:
Banjo Kazooie and Super Mario 64:
These games are so similar but so different! The moves and controls are virtually the same but Super MArio 64 is what kept Mario alive and onto the N64, whereas Banjo Kazooie, made by Rare, has had time to perfect itself after the N64's release. Super Mario 64 was the first proper 3D platformer and that's why it is a classic.

Goldeneye 007:
This game revolutionised 3D FPS's on the consoles. Although games like Doom and Duke Nukem had already been released on the PC, this game changed the way in which we play them. the baddies were actually in 3D and the choice of weapons was huge! The multiplayer is the best ever for any videogame and the fact that the levels are so much like the film means you'll be stuck into the game without a doubt!

There are other classics but I can't write too much about them because they are on consoles I don't own and haven't had a chance to sit down and properly play them. Some of these classics are:

Sonic The Hedgehog (MD)
Sonic 3D (MD)
Final Fantasy (NES)
Crash Bandicoot (PSX)

(Those last 2 I haven't played but I have seen or heard about them a lot).

Games that will be considered classics in future years will be games that revolutionised gaming.

Possibilities are: Half Life, B&W, PSO ('cos of the online bits?), M:SR?.

I don't think GT3 will as it doesn't really add anything new to the genre, just take whats already there and do a REALLY good version of it.

Deus Ex is another possibility, as is Shogun:Total War.
