Matt Groening will all ways be known for creating the Simpsons. EVEYONE has seen or at least heard of the Simpsons. It is the most famous cartoon ever made. But Matt Groening doesn’t want to be remembered only for the Simpsons because he wants (As he put it himself) "I don’t want just Simpsons graffiti on my tombstone. I want other graffiti, so that’s why I did Futurama"
Yep, that’s right, Groening has decided to create another cartoon. It’s not as good or as funny as the Simpsons, but quite frankly, I don’t think anything ever will be. It is however, a funny and very enjoyable cartoon!
The whole thing revolves around a guy called Fry. He lived around our time. But one day he accidentally cryogenically frozen and remained so for 1000 years. He woke up in the year 3000 and everything had changed. He didn’t know what to do so he sought out somewhere to live. He found one of his descendants who ran a business and began working for him. The business is called "Planet Express" and it’s their equivalent of the Royal Mail. It’s a delivery firm. So with the rest of the team Fry runs errands all over the galaxy getting in no end of trouble.
There are really only 3 main characters in Futurama so I’ll give you a quick rundown of them.
Fry: Voiced by Billy West, Fry is the main character. He’s a lazy slob who just wants to laze around all day drinking beer in his underwear. He all most all ways causes trouble for the delivery team. With the intellectual capacity of a squashed cucumber, Fry is one of the funniest characters. His most interesting adventure was when he became ruler of a world where the beings were made of water. He took over from the former ruler by drinking him accidentally.
Leela: She has purple hair and one eye and is the captain of the ship that Fry and co use to deliver things around the galaxy. Katey Segal lends her vocal chords for Leela. She is very attatched to her pet, Nibbler. When Bender flushed himdown the bog she was distraught. She is a tough but fair captain and has some great lines.
Bender: Bender is an uncaring robot who likes his drink. That’s understandable though because if he doesn’t drink then he’ll become robot drunk. Strange... He lives in a tiny broom cupboard that has a massive cupboard of it’s own. His best friend is, curiously enough, Fry. He spends most of his day lounging around Fry’s house watching cartoons. His voice is done by John DiMaggio and is done brilliantly.
The best episode that I’ve seen so far has to be the first episode. When Fry was introduced to the future, his crappy manipulation of all the things futuristic caused for hilarity and a "Pppprr, Tourist" from one of the locals.
The second series of Futurama is being shown on channel 4 on Tuesday’s and is a definite must see. Also you should try and pick up the series 1 Box-Set as some of the episodes are absolutely hilarious!
There’s no point in comparing this to the Simpsons, because nothing CAN compare to the Simpsons, but in it’s own right this is a very funny and extremely enjoyable programme.

Amazingly good cartoon. Bender is the character who keeps it funny, without him Futurama is nothing but I suppose that is the same with Homer in the Simpsons. Both great anyway.
