Looking in to my murky Crystal ball I can see how this years games will turn out, so I thought I’d pre-empt their release and write the reviews now*

Heavy Rain (PS3)
One of the big hitting PS3 titles of the year is this ‘cinematic experience’. What that phrase actually means is that you’ll hit buttons to make people do things like frown, pick up guns and stare menacingly into the camera.

Heavy Rain is a game where you play as 4 different characters and even if one dies the game carries on. This can be rather distressing though as the story constantly reminds you that you’ve killed off one of the main characters and tries to make you feel guilty. It also flashes up a number for the Samaritans (Sony was asked to put this in by the BBFC).

The feeling throughout the game is that you’re constantly being hounded to find the murderer that the game revolves around and the realism has been realised by threatening to send the developers around to your house with an axe if you don’t complete it.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 (360/PS3)
Heading up the sequels is Bad Company 2. It’s basically just like the first game but with more gold, more men and more macho one-liners. It also has more guns, more ways to blow people up, more buildings to hide in until they explode, more pixels per character design and more vehicles. It’s set to make more money for EA but critics have already said it’s just more of the same.

MAG (PS3)
MAG is the first online console game to have 256 players. This means that you’ll be up against 250 whiny American teens and 5 ‘normal people’ at 5pm GMT. If you can handle this then it’s not a bad game, as long as you haven’t already had enough of online war games where you play in squads trying to blow up another bunch of online players on the other side (see Bad Company 2 above).

Graphically, the game is grimy and dark, which either shows the dark grittiness of war or that the developers are all depressed.

As long as you can bear to talk with your fellow gamers this isn’t a bad game but it does rely on plenty of communication and no friendly fire.

Split/Second (360/PS3)
This racer is a fast paced drive of fun. The bright colours will give you headaches, the pumping soundtracks will only make it worse but then it’s a barrel of fun without thinking about all this realism stuff that Forza or Gran Turismo 5 enforce on you.

Split/Second is by far the best no-brains racer of 2010, if Michael Bay made racing games, this would be it.

Gran Tuismo 5 (PS3)
A tried and tested game series, Gran Turismo 5 delighted many but also shocked some people by way of the naked cheat that appeared on the internet. I mean, who could have seen that the team behind the game had a thing for Jeremy Clarkson?

Gamewise, GT5 comes up with the goods and the graphical shine can be seen all the way from the backgrounds to the treads on the wheels.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)
It’s not hard to see that Nintendo have bowed to public pressure and released a game for the hardcore, but did they really have to make Mario a chainsmoking renegade who, on the way to save Princess Peach (yet again) meets alien hookers, toad gang bosses and that final scene ‘cementing the deal’ with Peach is a step too far.
Otherwise it’s more of the same brilliant platforming fun with Mario and friends delighting everyone.
Rated 18.

Alan Wake (360)
Um, well, I can’t see anything. Perhaps it got delayed till 2011 again?

*Or possibly all made up for a slightly humorous game preview.

I'm interested to see wether the next Call of Duty will be brought out this year (hope not). Titles I'm awaiting within the next year:

FIFA 11
NHL 11
Hitman 4*
Assassin's Creed 3*
Call of Duty 7*
Gears of War 3* (actually not looking forward to this much, won't be that much different to previous titles)
Fable 3*

* - Unknown release date (so can't say within the next year)
