The true point of being in a band is to perform live, right?

you wanna do what you do best, and then some!

(NB don't use that phrase again)

Anyway, a live act needs to be interesting, exciting, different yeah?

I have been to a few gigs in the past, and all I see is a repeat of the album, note perfect songs. I could have sat at home in my comfortable chair listening to the exact same thing for free.
I think it's down to lack of experience on their part. Who am I to judge, but IF I can make it famous one day, I want to have got there by playing the horrible pubs at the dead of night to people who don't care at all; I want to play the nice competitions (and lose); I want to be heckled at, many times if possible.

Some bands go from the basement to the studio and haven't learned how to promote their instruments aswell as play them. When I see a live act, I want to see performers, entertainers, not just musicians.

Is this fair?

My brother went to see Coldplay, and said 'Yes they were very good, but it was nothing new.'

I haven't seen Badly Drawn Boy live but apparently he does stand up, cartwheels, plays punk versions of his songs. Many people have slagged this off, but it sound like something fun to me. You aren't just paying to see the music, but an act aswell!

If you are in a band, try and do something new. We are going to set up a Slide projector and a screen and I can use my typography and stuff to do something cool.

What do YOU think?

Mr Neil - what I was said was that it is hard to put on a specticular show and sing live. due to the limits of the human body. Try reading the post again.

Most boring concert I have EVER been to was to Natalie Imbruglia (excuse misspelling of name). The music was great but the concert was so BORING. The concert was as normal a couple of support acts who admittedly couldn't have been that bad as they did later enter the charts but who was also at the same time so good I have forgot who they are. Now before I digress too much Natalie's performance was her on stage for about 90 minutes although it seemed more like 9 hours. My problem was that I was and still not used to going to a concert and listening to a somebody sing. I go for the performance, the experience and even the excitement but sadly Natalie had less "performance" than a clapped out Skoda. Give me a decent Manic Street Preachers Concert anyway!

Hey, hang on a sec mate, I am not bad mouthing any pop acts, I happen to be quite a bit of an S Club 7 fan!

All I'm saying is that they should sing live, and it's not fair to the fans just to see their favourite group mime.

My brother went to see britney Spears live last year, and he said the performance was amazing, a true show. This is waht all bands should do, try and give a brilliant performance, a show.

You have obviously missed the main point of this discussion, mate.

Steps/SClub7/any other pop acts are very good at what they do live - and that is put on a specticle. To comapare a live Steps show to a Radiohead gig would be silly as the two have very different objectives to achieve. Kids coming out of a Steps gig will say they loved the costumes, or the dancing, or the lights - that's why they go.

There is also the practicle aspect that dancing around in huge costumes under hot lights isn't good for your singing! Also, kids don't like it when it sounds different from their CD at home. That's what they grew to love in the first place and changes to it, for them, are unwelcome.

Beleive it or not, I'm not a huge Steps fan - but I don't look down on those who are. Furthermore, I don't look down on the members of Steps - I couldn't do what they do. Would you be so arrogant as to say bands like Steps should do what you want them to and not their fans?

Wait a sec... I've got an article from a S Club 7 interview, it reads as follows:

*:'What do you feel about performing live?'
SC7:'oh we have to, always, otherwise we are cheating ourselves and our fans. It's what we are in a band for!'

Do I need to make any quirky remark?
I will...

Oh Please!

Yeah but even that is packaged and produced. Let's not go into the world of Miming, taht is just utterly despicable!

Did you know?

One year Steps got voted best live act... they mime every song except from the one time they do it in the studio (shudder).
