A printer tip that may help others...

I've an old Epson 895 and had a stock of Black Ink to use up. When this printer runs out of the combined colour cartridge it stops printing completely! Even though you only want to print black text you can't...

Epson's official answer is just to buy more ink!

After a bit of searching I found SSC Service Utility for Epson Stylus Printers - had a read about and it all seems ok, but I installed it on a 'play' PC 'just in case'!

It did exactly what I wanted - reset the chip in the colour cartridge so the printer thinks it's full. Moved the printer back to my main machine and can now happily print away and use all my black ink up :¬)

If the printer manufactures wanted to play fair and build themselves a decent reputation they could sort this out themselves...

A nice point, but Epson building a nice reputation? Think they may be at a postion where they have a decent reputation already. Although your point is still nicely valid, but how many companies actually want to be nice over making money?
