Christmas games are few and far between nowadays but there are a few classics that you can look for to put you in the mood should you find the hardware to run them on.
Christmas NiGHTS Sega Saturn
First and foremost is this Sega Saturn game which is an offshoot of the cult classic NiGHTs and appeared as a disc on the cover of a Saturn magazine (Dec 1996). Christmas NiGHTS starts with a lovely introduction about missing the spirit of Christmas and 2 children’s attempts to find it.
It plays in much the same way as the original, but your score at the end determines how many tries you get at opening presents in a match 2 style mini-game. The presents range from songs (including the sang version of the famous theme song), art and little games or extra characters to unlock. The scenery and characters also change with the date as well, letting you experience new things thoughout Christmas and the New Year. Worth finding an old Saturn for!
10/10
Toy Commander Christmas Surprise Sega Dreamcast
Another Sega offering from Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine (Jan 2001 issue), Christmas Toy Commander is a special level of Toy Home, a sort of Micro Machines with puzzle elements. It’s a great little game. Though the single level is quite short it allows for a lot of replay and can be dragged out every Christmas.
Father Christmas makes an appearance in Toy Commander.
8/10
Stella's Stocking Atari 2600
An unusual Christmas game for the classic Atari console. It contained 5 mini games which were actually pretty fun to play. Stay Frosty involved stopping a snowman melting, Elf Dash was a mad panic to look after a toy factory to get the toys ready for Christmas. Look closely and you’ll see a few Star Wars toys among the enemies out to attack you! Tossing Cookies sees you playing Santa and gathering cookies for your reindeer. Grandma's Revenge would have the Daily Mail up in arms as you try and run over reindeer. Cold War is just an all out snowball fight.
Here’s Stay Frosty in all its glory.
7/10
Nightmare Before Xmas
This Xbox and PS2 game came out not long after the Tim Burton film. Unlike the brilliant movie, however, the game isn’t really very good at all. The graphics are nice enough but it plays pretty badly.
3/10
The GBA version of the game, a sideways scrolling platform game, however, fairs much better and is actually quite fun if you can track it down.
6/10
Flash Games
With the sad fall of the Console Christmas game came the rise of the Flash game. Free games to play online, Christmas Flash based games are building up each year, with everything from throwing snowballs at santa to a fun timed sleigh ride that you can play in competition with others (very popular in our office the other year).
