Tony Hawk games have been around for ages and the surprising thing is that they’ve all revolved around the same idea, providing a skate-park of sorts to do tricks. Some may have ventured towards the role playing/adventure side of things, but they’ve always come down to rolling around a city or park on a skateboard in the end.
Well, not any more. Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam takes the skating superstar on a whole new mission, to go as fast as he can in a downward trajectory. But don’t think it’s just racing, like the SSX games you’ll need to produce boost from tricks and tactics in order to win races and winning sometimes involves gaining points from these tricks as well.
There are six areas to race in, all divided further by each race. Despite each area being broken up like this, the race courses are still fairly big and offer a fair amount of thrills. But it’s the boost that counts, and to get it you need to pull off lots of tricks. Luckily there are ramps, walls and loads of railings to grind from, using all the usual moves that Hawk fans will already be familiar with.
But the fun doesn’t stop there. The best feature about this game is the multiplayer. The option to race against 4 other players wirelessly and set up your race exactly how you want works really well, but it’s when you go online and race against people from around the world that this game really comes into its own. It’s like Mario Kart all over again. Fans of DS online gaming really need to pick up this game.
